SUMMARY:Re-stitching as Methodology: Garment-making as a Transformative Practice in Research-creation with Justine Woods
DESCRIPTION:In this combined presentation and workshop\, Justine Woods will discuss garment-making as research-creation with particular focus on the role garments play in resisting settler colonial displacement of Indigenous ontologies and bodies to place. Informed by her PhD dissertation research\, Justine will expand upon the concept of ‘re-stitching’ as both a theoretical framework and embodied practice in exploring how the act of garment-making done by the Indigenous body can regenerate Indigenous ontology and re-stitch new worlds and futurities. \nTo support the workshop component of the talk\, attendees are encouraged to bring an article of clothing that they do not mind making permanent changes and or adjustments to. \nMore About the Presenter: \nJustine Woods (she/her) is a garment artist\, creative scholar\, and educator with a focus in Indigenous fashion and material culture\, Indigenous arts-based methodologies\, performance and embodiment\, and research-creation. She is a Doctoral Candidate in the Media and Design Innovation practice-based PhD program at Toronto Metropolitan University. Justine is a registered citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario whose familial ties span the Red River\, Northern Michigan\, and Southern Georgian Bay in Ontario. Her Métis family names are Vasseur\, St. Onge\, Lafrenière\, and Berger-Beaudoin.

Participants will be invited to an active and supportive environment to take part in a diverse\, embodied\, and creative dialogue about the food crisis facing racialized and Indigenous students especially\, and the student population more generally. Following the workshop\, participants will also be invited to share their own stories over good food and good vibes. Dinner will include a vegan hearty stew and an authentic Ghanaian chicken and rice dish catered by Community FEWD (Food Equity With Dignity). \nThere are a limited number of in-person spots available\, and the workshop will also be livestreamed over Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to online participants the day before the event. \nThe workshop is supported by Arrell Food Insitute\, the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute\, The Guelph Lab\, Re•Vision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice\, and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. \nAbout the Facilitators\nThis workshop is facilitated by Dr. Jade Da Costa (they/she)\, a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Family Relations & Applied Nutrition with Re•Vision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice\, and Naty Tremblay (they/them)\, an Interdisciplinary Artist & Educator for Transformative Justice & Regenerative Reciprocity and PhD candidate in the Social Practice & Transformational Change Program. \nRSVP by Tuesday\, November 26 at 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace—Reading and Conversation with Dr. Phanuel Antwi (UBC)
DESCRIPTION:Ranging from the terrifying embrace of the slave ship’s hold to the racist encoding of ‘cuddly’ toys\, On Cuddling is a unique combination of essay and poetry that contends with the way racial violence is enacted through intimacy. Informed by Black feminist and queer poetics\, Antwi focuses his lens on the suffering of Black people at the hands of state violence and racial capitalism. As radical movements grow to advance Black liberation\, so too must our ways of understanding how racial capitalism embraces us all. Antwi turns to cuddling\, an act we imagine as devoid of violence\, and explores it as a tense transfer point of power. \nDr. Phanuel Antwi is the Canada Research Chair in Black Arts and Epistemologies in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia. He is an artist\, teacher and organizer concerned with race\, poetics\, movements\, intimacy\, and struggle. He works with text\, dance\, film\, and photography to intervene in artistic\, academic\, and public spaces. He is a curator\, activist\, and associate professor. He is an alumnus of the U of G and a research team member with the IICSI. \nPresented by Interdisciplinary Programs\, the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation\, and the Office of Academic Equity and Anti-Racism

SUMMARY:2024 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium: “Sheets of Sound: Jazz\, Improvisation\, and Liner Notes”
DESCRIPTION:Please join us from Wednesday\, September 11 to Saturday\, September 13 for the “2024 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium\, Sheets of Sound: Jazz\, Improvisation\, and Liner Notes.” \nThis colloquium will take place in person at ImprovLab (Room 108) in the MacKinnon Building. The event is free and open to everybody. \nSince 1996\, the Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium\, co-presented by the University of Guelph in partnership with the Guelph Jazz Festival\, has brought together diverse communities of interest by providing a scholarly forum for dialogue among researchers\, creative practitioners\, arts presenters\, and members of the general public. \nThe focus of this year’s colloquium is “Liner Notes.” \nIn what ways have liner notes shaped the way the music is received? To what extent do liner notes contribute to the ways in which we negotiate and construct meaning about the music\, how we understand history\, how and why we listen? In what ways have digital dissemination and streaming services disrupted our notions of liner notes? And how has this shifted listener/audience understanding about their favourite artists? \nFeaturing keynotes by Daphne Brooks (Department of African American Studies\, Yale University) and Ashley Kahn (NYU Tisch School of the Arts)\, this year’s edition of The Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium showcases panels\, workshops\, and artistic presentations that creatively respond to these tasks\, and that take up the question of what it means to use the liner note genre to write about jazz and creative improvised music.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Arboretum Workshop - Virtual Tree Identification
DESCRIPTION:Do you love trees but can’t tell an ash from a walnut\, a birch from a beech\, or a spruce from a fir? Are you looking to connect more with the natural world around you? Join Shelley Hunt\, University of Guelph course instructor and former Arboretum Director\, for a virtual\, interactive tree identification workshop. There will also be an optional in-person session available. Over the course of four Zoom sessions\, with hands-on challenges to complete in between\, you will learn the basics of tree ID\, with a focus on native Ontario species (and their look-alike non-native counterparts). You will learn about the important features to look for (e.g.\, leaf shape and arrangement\, bark characteristics\, fruits and cones)\, as well as the details that help us to distinguish between species in the same group (e.g.\, ashes\, pines\, maples). You will practice your skills on trees that you can find in your local area\, and get feedback on your ‘homework’. The fourth session will include a virtual tour of trees in The Arboretum’s collections. Sessions will run from noon to 1 p.m. (one hour of instruction\, and up to 30 minutes of optional questions/discussion) on Thursdays from July 7 through to July 28. \nFee: $50 (plus HST) per person\, per session. \nemail: arbworks@uoguelph.ca\nphone: 519-824-4120 Ext. 52113

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Thinking Spaces with Aruna Antonella Handa
DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “Untitled or how free is free anyway? Unpacking the ceteris paribus clauses in free improvisation\,” a talk by Aruna Antonella Handa. The event will take place via Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online.\nA Zoom link will be sent the day before the event. \nDescription\nI want to be free\, but so often i feel embarrassed as i find myself grasping for the scaffolding. I want to be free and then i hear the tropes i hear so often and it’s me\, my voice. I want to be free and yet somewhat paradoxically\, i need to be tied up in rules to experience freedom\, to break free of the invisible limits to my expression. I spy those ceteris paribus clauses in the world of free improv though. I can see that they are super packed\, the contents all pressed and folded with such precision that it’s actually staggering when you see how much they managed to fit in there. So\, how free is free anyway? \nMore about Aruna\nAruna Antonella Handa creates theatre\, music and performance art\, exploring the nexus of social justice\, environmental and intimate themes. Her work investigates fault lines between composed and improvised\, personal and social\, addictive and temperate\, artist and audience\, here and somewhere there. Salonnière of the Future Food Salon\, Aruna plans to launch the third series in Guelph at the Arboretum in late 2022 (Covid Mist Date: late 2023). A five-act immersive musical comedy\, Voyage to Anthropocene will explore the third kingdom of life: Fungi. Previous series which toured Toronto\, New York\, Austin and Montreal explored edible insects. With ensembles and as a solo artist\, Aruna has performed in Canada and the US at festivals and venues including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, Tarragon Spring Festival\, Nuit Blanche Toronto\, Canadian Music Week\, the Monarch Club\, and the Tranzac in Toronto. This year\, Aruna & the Sirens\, will release the LP Of Bones & Addicts\, and two singles including “City Hotel” which chronicles racist attacks in Ontario following the Trump electoral victory. Extending the work on gender-based violence she began with Have You Seen My Sister?\, which launched at Nuit Blanche in 2017\, Aruna addresses what the UN has labelled the ‘shadow pandemic’\, the global surge in domestic violence\, with a series of live performances of her song cycle\, and the release of a single recorded in socially distanced ways with musicians from across Canada and the US. Aruna had three degrees in philosophy (BA at McGill and an MPhil and PhD from University of London (King’s) but she ate them. \nWebsites: \n www.futurefoodsalon.com\nwww.haveyouseenmysister.ca\nwww.aruna.ca \nThis event is being co-presented with the Music Students’ Association (MSA) during their 16th Annual Creative Music Symposium. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all.
