DESCRIPTION:GCS Presents: φαινω: Exploring an Ancient World of Creativity \nThis free event is a vital component of engagement with the material taught in the Classical Studies program. The event will be split into two days; Friday\, March 3rd\, 2023 being a participatory “show & tell” of art\, poetry\, music\, dance\, and anything that does not fit the traditional lecture structure. This will give students a chance to showcase their work. The “lecture series” portion will be occurring on March 4\, featuring lectures from Dr. John Walsh\, Dr. Jay Oliver\, Dr. Sally Hickson\, Max Cull\, and Colton Gobbo. \nWe are hoping that students will have a newfound perspective on the study of Classics and how its methodologies are rapidly shifting.

DESCRIPTION:Join Wilfrid Laurier University Press editor Siobhan McMenemy and University of Alberta Press editor Mat Buntin for a Book Publishing Seminar\, hosted by Writing Services and the Research and Scholarship Team in the McLaughlin Library. \nThis event will be hosted in a hybrid format with attendance options for in person (Library Room 384) and online on Zoom. Register today on the Library website! \nFaculty\, staff\, graduate students\, and postdoctoral scholars are invited to an overview of the publishing process\, followed by a question-and-answer period about how to bring your book manuscript to publication. \nThe seminar will focus on scholarly book publishing\, with an emphasis on the processes and norms of university presses in Canada. The presentation will focus on publishing work in the humanities and social sciences\, including interdisciplinary scholarship. SUMMARY:Truth or Treason? Sources for the Study of Jacobites in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Scottish Studies students present their research and as we celebrate their remarkable achievements with a reception. \nAfter the revolutions of 1688\, the Jacobite movement posed a very serious challenge to the legitimacy of state structures throughout Scotland\, England and Wales\, and Ireland. The University of Guelph’s renowned Scottish Studies Collection boasts an outstanding array of Jacobite-related materials that speak to the complexity of the Jacobite movement\, the deep divisions it generated\, and broad alliances in which it was implicated. This fall\, Scottish Studies undergraduate and graduate students have been exploring these extraordinary sources in collaboration with Archival and Special Collections\, as they prepare to curate a forthcoming exhibit\, to be launched in 2023. \nEarly registration is encouraged as seating is limited. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies\, the Department of History and Archival & Special Collections (McLaughlin Library) at the University of Guelph.

DESCRIPTION:This year\, U of G’s annual common reading project – Gryphons Read – celebrates its sixth iteration. This year’s novel is Home of the Floating Lily\, by Bangladeshi-Canadian author and lawyer\, Silmy Abdullah. This collection of eight short stories follows the lives of everyday people as they navigate the complexities of migration\, displacement\, love\, friendship and familial conflict. \nGryphons Read is a campus-wide book club that brings the University community together over a selected novel and encourages meaningful conversations about the book. Lead by Student Experience\, individual residence and off-campus book clubs are organized and coordinated with discussion group facilitators and a tailored discussion guide with input from the author herself. Come to this hands-on workshop to learn how to get the most out of Pressbooks\, an easy and straightforward self-publishing software that can be used to create digital books\, white papers\, toolkits and other educational and online resources. \nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to navigate the intermediate-level functionality of Pressbooks (including importing existing openly licensed content\, integrating interactive components and using LaTeX syntax). Emphasis will be placed on building content that is accessible. \nPlease note:\nThis is a hands-on\, interactive session that presumes basic knowledge of Pressbooks functionality. University of Guelph history and art history students will present their research on medieval manuscripts in the “Manuscripts in the Curriculum II”* loan and other encounters with medieval books. \n*“Manuscripts in the Curriculum II” is an initiative of Les Enluminures\, a rare book firm based in Chicago\, New York\, and Paris\, which sponsors loans of medieval manuscripts for use in the classroom to universities and colleges in the US and Canada. The University of Guelph was one of four recipients of a Les Enluminures loan during the 2019/2020 academic year.
