SUMMARY:Judith Nasby on Rolph Scarlett
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sept. 25 at noon for a talk by Judith Nasby\, Curator Emerita and founding director of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre\, now the Art Gallery of Guelph. \nExploring the life and legacy of Guelph-born artist and pioneering figure in North American modernism Rolph Scarlett\, Nasby will trace Scarlett’s remarkable seventy-five-year career—from his early days in Ontario to his influential work in New York as an avant-garde abstract painter\, set designer\, industrial designer\, and creator of sculptural jewellery. \nKnown for his bold geometric abstraction in the 1930s and 1940s\, Scarlett was championed by Museum of Non-Objective Painting Director Hilla Rebay as her “greatest find\,” with over sixty of his works held in the museum’s collection. Offering insights shaped by her decades-long curatorial career and extensive research\, including her publication Rolph Scarlett: Painter\, Designer\, Jeweller\, Nasby will present a compelling portrait of a visionary artist whose contributions continue to resonate in the world of modern art. \nImage details: Rolph Scarlett\, Lyric Dramatic\, circa 1945\, oil on canvas. SUMMARY:AGG Fall Season Launch 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall exhibitions: Unsettling Conservation Collective: Reworldings\, curated by Alexandra Nordstrom\, as well as Soft Internet Theory\, curated by Tristan Sauer\, winner of the 2025 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators. These are accompanied by two exhibitions curated from the Art Gallery of Guelph’s collections: Earth Dreams in Colour: Soft Explosions\, curated by Nordstrom\, and Glass\, Concrete\, and Stone\, curated by Sauer. \nRooted in Indigenous knowledge and collaborative practice\, Reworldings features Glenn Gear\, Melaw Nakehk’o\, Sheri Osden Nault\, Adrian Stimson\, and Michelle Wilson\, whose work reimagines how Land and Water are valued and protected\, foregrounding relationships of care\, respect\, responsibility\, and reciprocity often obscured by settler colonial conservation frameworks. \nIn Soft Internet Theory\, Devlin Macpherson\, Shihab Mian\, Laura Moore\, Marisa Müsing\, and Matt Nish-Lapidus use net art\, sculpture\, video\, and textile to explore technology with empathy\, envisioning a softer\, more human digital future rooted in connection\, pushing back against the isolation and automation central to dead internet theory. \nArtists and curators will be in attendance. All are welcome—refreshments will be served; cash bar. \nImage details (right to left): Adrian Stimson\, Lone Bull II – Kenow Wildfire Waterton Park (detail)\, 2025\, oil on birchwood\, 45.7 x 61 cm. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ed Video\, the Art Gallery of Guelph invites you to an engaging evening featuring a screening of Susan Mogul’s 1997 film\, I Stare at You and Dream\, currently showcased alongside a collection of over 80 quillboxes in the exhibition Do You Remember Love. The film highlights the intersecting lives of four individuals\, following the intertwining familial and romantic relationships that explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nEvent Highlights\nCandid Corner Pop-Up: At 6:30 p.m.\, participate in Ed Video’s interactive video recording station where you can share your thoughts and reflections on relationships\, relationality\, and family\, themes inspired by the film. \nFilm Screening: Stay at 7:30 p.m. to watch Mogul’s intimate exploration of the lives of four individuals over six months. \nBefore the screening\, program facilitators will prompt participants with thought-provoking questions about relationships\, interpersonal connections\, and family ties. Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \nThis event is recommended for adults. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nSusan Mogul’s film contains mature themes and conversations. \nRegistration is appreciated but not required. Seating and space are limited\, so early arrival is encouraged. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception Paul Nadeau: Gravel is the New Gold
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of the exhibition Gravel is the New Gold\, featuring the work of artist Paul Nadeau. Drawing together the visual language of cottage-country ephemera with references to practices of measuring\, mapping\, and surveying\, Nadeau’s hyperreal paintings incorporate trompe l’oeil to underscore a certain perception of the Canadian wilderness that has both depended on and accelerated the continuous dispossession of Indigenous lands for resource extraction and leisure. \nThis exhibition represents the culmination of two years of focused work in the University of Guelph’s Master of Fine Arts program. The Art Gallery of Guelph’s annual exhibitions of graduating MFA students are presented in conjunction with the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph.

Representing individual experiences through the objects they carry with them\, this piece is made of materials recovered from the desert of Ciudad Juarez that were found half buried. \nImage detail: Monica Lozano\, The Cemetery\, 2022\, digital photograph. SUMMARY:Stories as a Nurse and a Nomad
DESCRIPTION:Available in person AND online. \nJoin the AGG Volunteer Association as they welcome Renata Mares for a talk and presentation at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. An AGG volunteer\, Renata works as an adaptation consultant and nurse educator. With a focus on public health\, Renata has been committed to assessing and improving the way the Canadian healthcare system functions and supports its workers\, especially nurses\, in the face of a healthcare crisis and pandemic. With a career that has taken her to four continents and thirty countries\, she lived and worked in Nunavut and the Yukon between 2015 and 2020\, a residency that transformed how she thinks about creative practice and wellbeing\, art and science. \nLiving within Inuit communities and engaging in community projects offered Renata direct engagement with artists in the North and their work across varied media\, as well as a deeper appreciation of the personal and social roles art plays. Living among northern communities also allowed Renata to build conversations with artists\, collecting not only art\, but stories of their motivation. Renata will speak about these experiences that have shaped her insight into building trust and resilience among individuals and communities\, as well as the profound impact of artistic exploration on health\, healing\, and wellbeing. \nJoin in person at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, or virtually on Zoom.
