DESCRIPTION:Learning the night sky is like getting to know a new neighbourhood. At first\, it may seem big and confusing\, but as you strike out and become more and more familiar with prominent landmarks\, the day comes when you realize that the neighbourhood is no longer new. It’s home. \nJoin us for monthly sessions as we get to know the night sky a little better. Participants will be introduced to prominent stars and constellations\, where to look for them and how the motions of planet Earth cause them to appear to shift from hour to hour and month to month. You will receive a downloadable star map to help you make your way through the stars. We’ll learn a half dozen or so constellations every month and you will be invited to discuss your observations with the group as we each get to know the neighbourhood a little better. \n*Please see in-person session below (April 11) before registering for any of these Constellation Walk Programs. If you want to attend the in-person evening you can register for it along with these 3 virtual sessions below. DESCRIPTION:Common orchids are very easy to grow\, but many people struggle with them. Robert has been growing orchids for over 30 years and will discuss all aspects of care including light\, watering\, repotting\, fertilizing and what to do when your plant is finished blooming. Using his simple techniques you will be able to grow them successfully and bloom them for six to eight months every year. \nThe information in this workshop applies to most orchids but the focus will be on Phalaenopsis which are the most common ones sold as houseplants. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: In-Person Animal Tracking
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what made those marks in the snow? In this full-day program we will learn how to track animals. We will study the tracks and signs of Ontario mammals and other types of wildlife. By the end of the day you will be able to identify and interpret animal tracks by looking at track patterns and gait analysis. The workshop will also include an introduction to scat identifcation. There is an outdoor component that will have us looking for and following animal tracks and trails. Please dress in layers to be outdoors and wear comfortable\, warm boots. \nRecommended: Bring a notebook and a measuring tape to help with track identification. \nFee: $90 (plus HST) per person if you register by the early bird deadline of January 26\, 2023. After January 26 the fee is $100 plus HST.

SUMMARY:Building Knowledge Together: Sharing Experiences Between Potato Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Can you imagine a world without french fries\, potato chips or poutine? Without potato farmers\, you might have to! With climate change and the cost of production putting more and more pressure on farmers\, local potato producers are asking: how do we keep growing your favourite foods? \nJoin us in the UofG Arboretum on Wednesday\, February 1st from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm to hear from three Ontario potato growers who provide very different approaches to this question. Come for the discussion\, and stay for free coffee and snacks! \nThis in-person knowledge exchange between potato farmers in Ontario and students and professors at the University of Guelph aims to share lessons regarding sustainable best practices for potato production\, spotlighting challenges within the sector and opening conversation and dialogue on the need to innovate (i.e.\, technology\, labour\, skills and information) to build resilience capacity regarding climate change consequences. \nRegistration is open to the first 70 participants including students\, professors\, OMAFRA officers and farmers who are interested in understanding and addressing sustainability challenges within the agricultural sector in Ontario. \nThe event will be lead by graduated students at the University of Guelph\, and is supported by the Arrell Food Institute scholar. \nRegistration is free and open to all through the Eventbrite link. \nIf you have any questions about the event\, please email the SEDRDGSS\, Charlotte Potter or Dr. Silvia Sarapura. \n

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop:  Virtual Starting Plants from Seed
DESCRIPTION:This is a two part course that will introduce you the wonders of growing all kinds of different plants from seed and will draw on Robert Pavlis’ experience growing over 2\,000 species of plants from seed. \nPart 1: Fundamentals of Seed Germination\nThis first part will look at the basics of seed biology to really understand the development of a plant from seed. This knowledge will then be expanded to discuss important topics such as collecting your own seed and storing seed for future growth. We’ll have an in depth look at seed dormancy and different ways of overcoming it.\nWe’ll then look at some specific examples like germinating petunias\, peonies\, jack-in-the-pulpits\, and maple trees. These will provide insight into different types of seed germination processes. \nPart 2: Practical Aspects of Seed Germination\nDescription: Now that you understand the fundamental basics it is time to look at the practical aspects of growing from seed. We’ll look at different techniques such as growing in pots\, the baggy method and winter sowing. This planetarium series explores the planets\, stars and constellations that are visible in the night sky this month. In the session\, you’ll learn a few of the brighter constellations\, their mythology\, the names of a few of the brighter stars and their lore and meaning. \nGuests will learn how to orient themselves in the sky and find the Big Dipper and how it can be used to find north. Using this information\, we’ll also learn where to look to find planets that are visible in the sky this month. Planets are always on the move\, as are we! \nAll planetarium sessions are live and interactive. Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their questions and ask away\, as we sit under the dome and ponder the sky above us\, and seek to understand a little better\, our place in space. \nMarch 2020 will feature Uranus and Gemini. \nSEATING ARRANGEMENTS: The planetarium dome is 5 m in diameter. It is a small but intimate space and therefore necessary to be seated on the floor during the presentation. A small foam cushion is provided. Orbiting many of these planets are a wide variety of moons\, each with its own unique story to tell. This program will explore some of the differences between planets and moons and will introduce some of the major moons of our solar system. We will review definitions of star\, planet\, moon and orbit\, as well as the associated sizes\, distances\, and scales. \nWe’ll look into the motions of the Earth\, sun and our moon and how they cause the Earth’s moon cycles through phases. The first 30 minutes of the program will be spent outside of the dome working with physical models of the Earth\, sun and moon to help understand what we see in the sky. \nSEATING ARRANGEMENTS: The planetarium dome is 5 m in diameter. It is a small but intimate space and therefore necessary to be seated on the floor during the presentation. A small foam cushion is provided. Please visit the Arboretum’s website for more information –  \nJoin guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his planetarium for this amazing program (families welcome and encouraged). \nThe red planet Mars will be well positioned for observation in fall 2020. In advance of this opportunity\, this show provides an opportunity to explore the some of the basic scientific facts that have been discovered about one of our closest space neighbors. We’ll begin by reviewing what is meant by the terms “planet” and “orbit.” \nFrom there\, we’ll go on to learn how to recognize Mars (and other planets) in the night sky before reviewing some of Mars’ physical characteristics. Mars appears to have once been a lot like Earth\, with oceans and a dense atmosphere\, but then it all went horribly wrong. Much of what we have learned about Mars has come from robotic missions\, which seem to give rise to as many questions as are answered. \nSEATING ARRANGEMENTS: The planetarium dome is 5 m in diameter. It is a small but intimate space and therefore necessary to be seated on the floor during the presentation. A small foam cushion is provided. Lunch will be provided. \nPresented by: Youth Action on Climate Change with support from the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences and Our Energy Guelph \n\nLARISSA CRAWFORD \nLarissa is a published Indigenous and anti-racism researcher\, award-winning ribbon skirt artist\, activist\, and proudly passes on Métis and Jamaican ancestry to her daughter\, Zyra. She is the founder of Future Ancestors Services\, an enterprise that provides speaking\, training\, research\, and community services that centre ancestral accountability\, climate justice\, and equity. Her organization hosts a new-age speakers bureau that charts and supports diverse service contractors based in Canada\, with the aim of uplifting people who\, despite facing disproportionate barriers\, remain committed to Earth and community in their work and lives. \nLarissa is a 2019-20 Action Canada Fellow; Government of Canada 2020 10 Influencers to Watch; FLARE Magazine Top 50 Women; a 2019 GLOBE Very Impactful Person; and a Corporate Knights’ 2019 Top 30 Under 30 in Sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Join guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his planetarium for this amazing program (families welcome and encouraged). This planetarium series explores the planets\, stars and constellations that are visible in the night sky this month. In the session\, you’ll learn a few of the brighter constellations\, as well as their mythology\, in addition to the names of a few of the brighter stars and their lore and meaning. \nGuests will learn how to orient themselves in the sky and find the Big Dipper and how it can be used to find north. Using this information\, we’ll also learn where to look to find planets that are visible in the sky this month. Planets are always on the move as are we! \nAll planetarium sessions are live and interactive.
