Participants will be introduced to prominent stars and constellations\, where to look for them and how the motions of planet Earth cause them to appear to shift from hour to hour and month to month. You will receive a downloadable star map to help you make your way through the stars. We’ll learn a half dozen or so constellations every month and you will be invited to discuss your observations with the group as we each get to know the neighbourhood a little better. \n*Please see in-person session below (April 11) before registering for any of these Constellation Walk Programs. If you want to attend the in-person evening you can register for it along with these 3 virtual sessions below. If you sign up for the in-person you do not need to sign up for the virtual\, as they are included in the in-person registration. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person\, per session (evening).

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Propagating Plants from Cuttings
DESCRIPTION:Cuttings are a great way to propagate all kinds of plants including perennials\, trees\, shrubs and houseplants. This workshop will look at different ways to propagate cuttings and compare them to using seeds. Most of the time will be spent on techniques that use media other than water. \nWe’ll distinguish between softwood\, semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings. Have a look at different media and examine the role of rotting hormones\, both commercial and DIY options. \nThe speaker will show you his simplified method that is great for gardeners since it requires no special equipment. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Composting for Gardeners - Bokashi Composting
DESCRIPTION:Bokashi composting is a simple way of treating kitchen waste right in your home. There is almost no odor and it’s simple to do. This workshop will provide you with all of the knowledge you need to be successful with this technique. \nBokashi can be done in special commercial vessels with purchased bokashi bran but it can also be done in simple DIY pails and homemade starter bran. Both options will be discussed. The bokashi process may have some environmental benefits over traditional composting and we’ll have a look at that as well. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Composting for Gardeners - Vermicomposting
DESCRIPTION:Vermicomposting is a way of using earth worms to compost organic material. One benefit of this method is that it can be done in the home using special bins that require a very small space. \nThe course will introduce you to the equipment needed including some inexpensive DIY options. It will help you select the right kind of worms and show you how to maintain them to keep them healthy. We’ll review ways of harvesting the vermicasts – the worm poop – and explain how it should be treated for best results in the garden. \nAt the end of this course you will know the basics of taking care of your new pets and how to resolve any problems you might have. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Composting for Gardeners - Composting Piles\, Bins and Drums
DESCRIPTION:The previous workshop provided information about the composting process. This workshop is more hands on and looks at various methods for completing both hot and cold composting. Hot composting is the traditional method using one or more bins. This is a great system that makes faster compost\, but it is impractical for smaller gardens. Various plastic bins and drums are more suitable there. We’ll have a look at various commercial and DIY systems. \nAt the end of this course you will be able to select the right composting system that meets your requirements and you will know how to start the process\, care for it\, and what to do with the finished compost. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Building Knowledge Together: Sharing Experiences Between Potato Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Can you imagine a world without french fries\, potato chips or poutine? Without potato farmers\, you might have to! With climate change and the cost of production putting more and more pressure on farmers\, local potato producers are asking: how do we keep growing your favourite foods? \nJoin us in the UofG Arboretum on Wednesday\, February 1st from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm to hear from three Ontario potato growers who provide very different approaches to this question. Come for the discussion\, and stay for free coffee and snacks! \nThis in-person knowledge exchange between potato farmers in Ontario and students and professors at the University of Guelph aims to share lessons regarding sustainable best practices for potato production\, spotlighting challenges within the sector and opening conversation and dialogue on the need to innovate (i.e.\, technology\, labour\, skills and information) to build resilience capacity regarding climate change consequences. \nRegistration is open to the first 70 participants including students\, professors\, OMAFRA officers and farmers who are interested in understanding and addressing sustainability challenges within the agricultural sector in Ontario. \nThe event will be lead by graduated students at the University of Guelph\, and is supported by the Arrell Food Institute scholar. \nRegistration is free and open to all through the Eventbrite link. \nIf you have any questions about the event\, please email the SEDRDGSS\, Charlotte Potter or Dr. Silvia Sarapura. \n
