SUMMARY:Truscott Lecture in Justice - The Rule of Law and Public Confidence
DESCRIPTION:The Truscott Lecture in Justice series welcomes Chief Justice of Ontario\, The Honourable Michael H. Tulloch. \nMichael H. Tulloch\nAppointed as Chief Justice and President of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 2022\, Chief Justice Tulloch brings nearly two decades of judicial experience. In this session\, Chief Justice Tulloch will explore how the rule of law underpins trust in the justice system and discusses the essential relationship between judicial leadership\, transparency\, and public confidence in Canadian institutions. The Rule of Law is the foundation on which public trust in our justice system rests. Through strong and committed leadership\, we can ensure that Canadians continue to have confidence in our institutions and the integrity of our legal system. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity to gain perspectives on the evolving challenges and responsibilities of the judiciary in maintaining the integrity of the legal system. \n\nThe lecture series is part of the Truscott Initiative launched at U of G in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of Guelph resident Steven Truscott and his family. \nTruscott is known across Canada for his decades-long battle to prove his innocence after the 1959 murder of his schoolmate Lynne Harper. He was wrongly convicted of the crime at age 14 and spent years in prison before his release in 1969. He was acquitted by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2007. \nThe Truscott Initiative aims to improve understanding of the nation’s complex criminal justice system and to highlight how criminal justice intersects with other policy areas and broader conceptions of justice. \n\nRegistration is not required for this event.

SUMMARY:2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology
DESCRIPTION:The College of Biological Science is proud to host Prof. Holly A. Shiels (Faculty of Biology\, Medicine and Health\, University of Manchester) as the keynote speaker of the 2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology. \nFrom Oil Spills to Air Pollution: The Heartbreak of PAHs\nPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derive from fossil fuels and enter aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems where they are cardiotoxic. This seminar will begin with marine oil spills and the evidence pointing to the 3-ringed PAH – phenanthrene – as a key cardiotoxicant for fish and aquatic invertebrates. The data will show how exposure to this single but ubiquitous pollutant disrupts cellular function in cardiomyocytes leading to changes in whole organ function. These effects increase susceptibility to life-threatening arrhythmias and mechanistically link an abundant pollutant to cardiac health risk. As global levels of fossil-fuel based pollution continue to rise\, the vertebrate cardiotoxicity discussed here also serves as a portend for human health. \nJoin us in-person (ALEX 200) or online (https://zoom.us/j/95799778017?pwd=a21wbU1oUC9kWFRNbVVJOFU4RTh3QT09; Meeting ID: 957 9977 8017; Passcode: 402870) \nEVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND! \nFor questions about this event\, email tgillis@uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:SES Lunch and Learn Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The School of Environmental Science presents the latest installment of its Lunch and Learn speaker series with Robert Bradley\, Soil Ecology Biology Department\, University of Sherbrooke\, Québec. \nBradley will speak on “Ericaceous shrubs and conifer growth check.” \nIn Boreal forests of Canada\, the growth check of conifer regeneration is often coincident with the spread of ericaceous shrubs. Bradley will summarize 25 years of research findings on this phenomenon. These studies cover a range of related topics soil as nitrogen cycling\, the biology and biochemistry of forest soils\, plant nutrient uptake strategies\, ecological disturbance and succession. He will conclude with a brief outline of silvicultural treatments that potentially mitigate or exacerbate the problem of conifer growth check. \nAlexander Hall\, Room 218
