SUMMARY:Protecting Individual Privacy in Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Modern machine learning systems are trained on massive amounts of data. It turns out that\, without special care\, machine learning models are prone to regurgitating or otherwise revealing information about individual data points. This is problematic when parts of the training data are sensitive or contain private information\, as is commonly the case in many settings of interest. Dr. Kamath will discuss differential privacy\, a rigorous notion of data privacy\, and how it can be used to provably protect against such inadvertent data disclosures by machine learning models. He will focus particularly on recent approaches that simultaneously employ both non-sensitive and sensitive data\, granting significant improvements in the utility of privately trained models. He will also discuss pitfalls with these methods and potential paths forward for the field. \nBio: Gautam Kamath is an Assistant Professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo\, and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and Faculty Member at the Vector Institute. He has a B.S. in Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University\, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is interested in reliable and trustworthy statistics and machine learning\, including considerations such as data privacy and robustness. He was a Microsoft Research Fellow\, as a part of the Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship Program at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing. He serves as an Editor in Chief of Transactions on Machine Learning Research. He is the recipient of the Faculty of Math Golden Jubilee Research Excellence Award\, an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement\, and was awarded the Best Student Presentation Award at the ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing.

SUMMARY:National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was created in 2021 as a federal statutory holiday in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action # 80 which called for a day of commemoration. \nWe call upon the federal government\, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples\, to establish\, as a statutory holiday\, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors\, their families\, and communities\, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. \nThe day serves to honour the Survivors of residential school and the children who never returned home\, as well as their families and communities. \nTo learn more about the progress on the Calls to Action visit Indigenous Watchdog’s website or read Calls to Action Accountability: A 2022 Status Update on Reconciliation\, a special report from the Yellowhead Institute. \n  \nFor a full line up of events\, please visit U of G’s Truth and Reconciliation webpage.

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day | Every Child Matters
DESCRIPTION:Started in 2013\, in Williams Lake\, British Columbia\, Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration and reunion events. Phyllis Webstad shared the memory of her shiny new orange shirt\, bought by her grandmother\, that was taken from her on her first day at the school. \nThe St. Joseph Mission Residential School\, which was open from 1891-1981\, was one of 130 residential schools in Canada. Now the day honours the Survivors\, those who didn’t make it and the families that have been impacted by residential schools. \nThe Orange Shirt Society encourages and supports the commemoration of Orange Shirt Day. \nOrange shirts will be on sale at the U of G Bookstore the week of September 25.  \nIndigenous Initiatives\, the Indigenous Student Centre and the Bookstore have collaborated to bring a unique orange shirt to campus in acknowledgement of Orange Shirt Day. $5 from the sale of each shirt will be donated to the Survivor Secretariat\, an organization that organizes and supports efforts to uncover\, document and share the truth about what happened at the Mohawk Institute during its 140+ years of operation. \nThe design was created by Kaitlin Gallant\, Indigenous graphic designer\, illustrator and beadwork artist. \nIn honour of Residential School Survivors and the children who never returned home\, the shirt depicts a Forget-Me-Not flower surrounded by Sage and Sweetgrass. Sweetgrass braids remind us of our strength when we come together\, and sage supports our healing.
