Dr. Bruce McAdams, a professor in the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, discussed how tipping etiquette is changing on an episode of CBC Radio’s Cross Country Checkup.

McAdams explained how tipping has transformed from a reward for good service to a method of subsidizing lower-paid jobs, before noting businesses need to be careful with their approaches to tipping since customers will choose to vote with their money.

For more than 10 years, McAdams has researched and published papers on tipping with Dr. Mike von Massow, a professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Ontario Agricultural College. McAdams also studies sustainability issues within the food service industry in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management.
