SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: Butterflies on the Brink
DESCRIPTION:Butterflies on the Brink: The Story of the Mottled Duskywing tells the story of a University of Guelph project to reintroduce an endangered butterfly. The documentary will be screened at the Bookshelf Cinema in downtown Guelph on March 29 at 4:30 p.m. and April 3 at 7 p.m. \nButterflies on the Brink follows the research and recovery team\, led Dr. Ryan Norris from the Department of Integrative Biology and biologist Jessica Linton\, with support from the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory team\, as they work to reintroduce the mottled duskywing butterfly to Pinery Provincial Park. The project represents the first time a butterfly has ever been successfully reintroduced into Ontario\, and\, since their reintroduction in 2021\, the butterflies are showing signs of recovery. \nOnce widespread across many parts of central Canada\, mottled duskywings have nearly disappeared from Ontario. Like many other species\, the butterflies’ number have plummeted in recent decades due to habitat loss. In 2012\, the butterflies were declared endangered in Canada. \nButterflies on the Brink is a captivating tale of triumphs\, setbacks\, and the unwavering dedication of a group determined to secure the future of this enchanting butterfly. \nDr. Ryan Norris and Jessica Linton will be at the screening for a Q&A afterwards. \nAdvance tickets are available in the bookstore. All seats $12.00 (HST included). \nThe film recently won Best Feature at the SOFA Film Festival.

SUMMARY:One Health seminar - Impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Whitney Preisser\, Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University\, Georgia\, USA will speak on “Using historical ecology to measure the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish.” \nDr. Preisser will discuss two projects using fluid-preserved specimens to determine the impacts of climate change\, heavy metal pollution\, microplastics\, and reservoir damming on parasitic diseases of fish over long time spans. First\, using more than 600 marine fish specimens collected between 1880 and 2019 in the Salish Sea\, she tracked changes in parasite communities over time and investigated the potential for heavy metal pollution and sea surface temperature to have caused the observed changes. Second\, using over 500 freshwater fish collected between 1999 and 2016 in Georgia\, she explored the effects of reservoir damming on the diversity and abundance of parasitic infections. Using a subset of those fish\, she also quantified the prevalence of microplastics and nanoplastics in digestive tracts and searched for links between plastics and parasites. \nThis seminar will be online via Teams. Register to attend.

SUMMARY:Conservation & Planetary Health: A Journey from Community Forest Preservation to Planetary Health
DESCRIPTION:Natural systems and human well-being are deeply connected. Ranaivo’s research in Madagascar\, Central America\, and Kenya highlights the importance of forests\, fisheries\, and local community participation in their management to human health outcomes. Investments in nature conservation are therefore public health investments. Sustainable strategies must benefit both people and nature.

SUMMARY:Countering Policy Exclusions: Centring accessibility to advance the right to housing
DESCRIPTION:Despite a range of policies\, promises\, and protections\, housing for people with disabilities—and specifically that considers the distinct experiences of women and gender-diverse people with disabilities—remains deeply inadequate in Ontario and across the country. People with disabilities face disproportionate rates of homelessness\, housing insecurity\, and housing inadequacy\, and women with disabilities are especially likely to experience homelessness because of violence or abuse. This creates dangerous consequences when coupled with inadequate housing supports in communities across Ontario\, a failure to centre accessibility in efforts to increase housing supply\, and grossly inadequate social assistance rates for people with disabilities. \nJoin a conversation with civil society leaders and researchers about what is needed to ensure the right to housing for women and gender-diverse people with disabilities across the province\, and the role of women and gender-diverse people with disabilities in leading responses to these housing failures. \nRegister to attend in-person (space is limited) or to receive the Zoom link.
