SUMMARY:Virtual Cottage Birds Series
DESCRIPTION:While sitting on the dock\, have you ever asked “Did that loon just attack that duck?” or “How can that Pileated Woodpecker peck such big holes without hurting its brain?” or “Which hawk is that flying overhead?” The answers to these and many other bird-related questions will be covered in this series of eight one-hour sessions on the birds you notice while visiting a cottage\, hiking in a northern park or tenting at your favourite campsite. We will cover identification clues\, behavior\, nesting info\, habitat\, foraging techniques and more. Cottage projects and activities that help birds will also be a part of each session as well as a 10-15 minute discussion period for bird-related questions. All eight programs cost of $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! \nMondays and Wednesdays\, January 20\, 22\, 27\, 29\, February 3\, 5\, 10\, and 12\, 2025\, noon to 1 p.m. \nFee: $70.00 + H.S.T. This event will take place on Zoom. The list of topics with the presentation date is listed below. SUMMARY:One Health Seminar - Microbiome Stewardship and One Health with Dr. Kieran O'Doherty
DESCRIPTION:Microbiomes are essential for human\, animal\, plant\, and ecosystem health. \nDespite widespread recognition of the importance of microbiomes\, there is little attention to monitoring and safeguarding microbial ecologies on policy levels. Evidence is accumulating that microbiomes are deteriorating owing to practices at societal levels\, such as pesticide use in agriculture\, air and water pollution\, and overuse of antibiotics. Potential policy on these issues would cross multiple policy domains\, such as public health\, environment\, agriculture and more. What is needed is a concept that can act as a foundation for safeguarding microbial ecologies for healthy people\, animals\, and environments across diverse policy domains. \nIn this presentation Dr. O’Doherty introduces the notion of microbiome stewardship to serve in this capacity. He examines challenges to be addressed and steps to take toward developing meaningful microbiome stewardship.

DESCRIPTION:Although many people think that procrastination is a time management issue\, most often it is an emotional response. \nWe’ll tackle the “complicated failure of self-regulation” in the anxiety-procrastination cycle by learning tips\, reviewing research insights\, and practicing practical strategies to intervene when anxiety and procrastination are feeding each other. SUMMARY:Intro to GIS using ArcGIS Online: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to manually add data to your map\, and how to access analysis functions. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS Online can be used in your browser on any computer and is available to the University community by requesting an account. ArcGIS Online has less mapping capability than ArcPro but is easier to use and to learn. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS Online. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless otherwise confirmed with the instructor. This workshop has limited attendance available. SUMMARY:Virtual Cottage Birds Series
DESCRIPTION:While sitting on the dock\, have you ever asked “Did that loon just attack that duck?” or “How can that Pileated Woodpecker peck such big holes without hurting its brain?” or “Which hawk is that flying overhead?” The answers to these and many other bird-related questions will be covered in this series of eight one-hour sessions on the birds you notice while visiting a cottage\, hiking in a northern park or tenting at your favourite campsite. We will cover identification clues\, behavior\, nesting info\, habitat\, foraging techniques and more. Cottage projects and activities that help birds will also be a part of each session as well as a 10-15 minute discussion period for bird-related questions. All eight programs cost of $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! \nMondays and Wednesdays\, January 20\, 22\, 27\, 29\, February 3\, 5\, 10\, and 12\, 2025\, noon to 1 p.m. \nFee: $70.00 + H.S.T. This event will take place on Zoom. The list of topics with the presentation date is listed below. If you miss any of the programs\, each one is recorded and the recording will be sent to you the next day. The recordings will be available for one month after the last program.

Focus is on hardiness zones 4 – 6. \nWe’ll cover the following topics: \n\nCreating a new bed and different systems; in the ground\, raised beds and growing in containers\nBest soil selection and how to get it ready for the growing season\nWhen to use seed vs transplants\, and starting early indoors\nDealing with weeds and other gardening tricks\nWatering\, sun and fertilizer – keep them growing for a maximum yield\nHarvesting and fall crops\nCommon vegetables myths\n\nRobert is a Master Gardener and garden writer who publishes two popular gardening blogs and has published several gardening books. Have you heard about the work of a University of Guelph librarian\, who used her love of books as a base for community work and scholarly engagement? \nJoin the University of Guelph’s Office of Teaching and Learning in celebrating Black History Month with an exhibit dedicated to honouring past and contemporary Black education practitioners in the Guelph\, Wellington\, and Waterloo regions. An exhibition featuring profiles of past and contemporary Black education practitioners. will be displayed on the first floor of McLaughlin Library and will be available for viewing from Monday\, Feb. 3\, to Friday\, Feb. 7\, 2025. \nThe captivating exhibit chronicles the historical contributions of the Black community to teaching excellence in these regions and connects these historical efforts to more recent efforts to highlight anti-oppressive and inclusive pedagogies.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Guelph is hosting a virtual conversation with Bob Rae\, Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations (UN) in New York for International Development week.   \nHear from one of Canada’s foremost leaders in diplomacy and international development as he reflects on Canada’s leadership role in promoting sustainable\, inclusive and evidence-based approaches to development and international cooperation. Rae has served as Canada’s ambassador to the UN since 2020 and was elected to the UN Presidency of the Economic and Social Council for 2024-25. He also served as the premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995.   \nThe conversation will take place virtually on Monday\, Feb. 3\, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. via Zoom. In 2024\, he was elected president of the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the 2025 session. Previously\, Mr.  Rae  was Premier of Ontario from 1990-1994\, and interim Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2011-2013. In 2017\, he was appointed to be Canada’s Special Envoy to Myanmar\, and in 2020 he was appointed to be Canada’s Special Envoy on Humanitarian and Refugee Issues. A strong advocate for human rights and international cooperation\, he has played a significant role in Canada’s engagement with global issues\, including Indigenous reconciliation and refugee advocacy.  \nDr. Andrea Paras\, Director\, Guelph Institute of Development Studies and Associate Professor\, Department of Political Science\nDr. Andrea Paras is currently co-writing a book manuscript that examines how healthcare institutions in Canada have retained their Catholic identity in the context of a religiously diverse yet publicly secular Canadian society. Another SSHRC-funded project investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canada’s foreign aid sector\, with a specific focus on the localisation practices\, growth aspirations and geographies of Small and Medium Organisations. She has previously conducted research on the history and politics of humanitarianism\, including her book Moral Obligations and Sovereignty in International Relations: A Genealogy of Humanitarianism (Routledge\, 2019)\, as well as investigated the history and current practices of faith-based development organizations. Her research has been published in the Canadian Journal of Development Studies\, Voluntas\, Journal of Development Studies\, Intercultural Education\, and Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad.  \nJason Moreton\, Vice-President External\, University of Guelph\n \nJason Moreton previously served as the Associate Vice-President\, Advancement for the University’s Alumni Affairs & Development (AA&D) department at the University of Guelph. He has held a number of leadership positions within AA&D since 2005 and has made significant contributions to the department’s successes and culture. His expertise spans critical areas of university advancement – including relationship building\, fundraising\, alumni engagement\, campaign development\, strategic planning\, and team leadership.

SUMMARY:Intro to GIS using ArcGIS Pro: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcPro\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology\, and labelling\, how to filter data\, and how to create a finished map. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. ArcGIS Pro is the desktop mapping software of ArcGIS. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcPro is available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees.
