SUMMARY:Intro to GIS using ArcGIS Online: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:Registration will open 4 weeks before the workshop. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to manually add data to your map\, and how to access analysis functions. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS Online can be used in your browser on any computer and is available to the University community by requesting an account. ArcGIS Online has less mapping capability than ArcPro but is easier to use and to learn. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS Online. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless otherwise confirmed with the instructor. This workshop has limited attendance available. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We cannot troubleshoot software during the session. You will find you are able to participate more fully if you have a 2nd screen on your computer. \nPlease note: this workshop will take place online. A reminder email with the meeting link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the workshop.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Family Edition Build a Poem from Place with Anna Swanson
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the city in a whole new way—by turning a walk into a poem! \nLocation: The Boathouse Tea Room\, 116 Gordon St\, Guelph ON \nFor kids ages 7–12 and their caregivers \nCome explore the city in a whole new way—by turning a walk into a poem! On this playful and creative walk\, we’ll use our eyes\, ears\, and imaginations to notice the world around us: the sounds of the river\, the shapes of the trees\, the colours of the sky\, and the textures under our feet. \nWe’ll start and end at the Boathouse Tea Room\, with a walk along the river nearby. Along the way\, we’ll collect words—things we see\, hear\, and feel—and write them down. At the end\, we’ll use those words to build poems\, rearranging them to create new meaning. \nThis walk is part of a bigger series that helps us see the city differently—not just how it looks on a map\, but how it feels to walk through it\, to imagine it\, and to listen to its stories. \nNo writing experience needed—just curiosity\, creativity\, and a love of adventure. \nAccessibility: This event will involve walking slowly on flat gravel walkways and some uneven dirt trails\, with several stops to talk or write. There generally will not be formal seating where we stop to write\, except for logs\, blankets\, etc. There are no significant inclines\, and there are ramps in any place with stairs\, including the bridge. There will likely be a porta-potty at one point along the route (not wheelchair accessible)\, but we suggest using the washroom before the walk. Please contact info@artgalleryofguelph.ca in advance if you have accessibility questions or for further information.

SUMMARY:ArcGIS Pro 2 - More Analysis in GIS: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:Workshop registration will open 4 weeks before the workshop. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll learn further GIS tools\, work with tables\, and begin working with raster data. Participants are expected to have strong familiarity with ArcGIS Pro before registering in this workshop. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, and also available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS Pro installed on your computer prior to the workshop AND you must log into ArcGIS Online to create a U of G account in order to access ArcGIS Pro. You will not have time during the session to install the software or troubleshoot account issues. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We cannot troubleshoot software or installations during the session. If you are unable to install the software please contact the presenter so we can give your seat to someone on the waiting list. You will find you are able to participate more fully if you have a 2nd screen on your computer. \nIf you have any issues with your install\, please contact the IT Help Desk. \nThis workshop will take place online. A reminder email with the meeting link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the workshop.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tree Identification
DESCRIPTION:Do you love trees but can’t tell an Ash from a Walnut\, a Birch from a Beech\, or a Spruce from a Fir? Are you looking to connect more with the natural world around you? Join Shelley Hunt\, U of Guelph course instructor and former Arboretum Director\, for a virtual\, interactive tree identification workshop. Over the course of four Zoom sessions\, with hands-on challenges to complete in between\, you will learn the basics of tree ID\, with a focus on native Ontario species (and their look-alike non-native counterparts). You will learn about the important features to look for (e.g. leaf shape and arrangement\, bark characteristics\, fruits and cones)\, as well as the details that help us to distinguish between species in the same group (e.g. Ashes\, Pines\, Maples). You will practice your skills on trees that you can find in your local area\, and get feedback on your ‘homework’. The fourth session will include a virtual tour of trees in The Arboretum’s collections. \nPlease Note: This course is only on-line. A separate in-person course is also available on June 19.\nWe also send recordings out after each session\, so if you miss a session you can watch the recording. The recordings are available for one month after the end of the workshop.\nWednesdays\, May 21\, 28\, June 4 and 11\, 2025 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nFee: $50 (plus HST) per person.
