DESCRIPTION:While sitting on the dock\, have you ever asked “Did that loon just attack that duck?” or “How can that Pileated Woodpecker peck such big holes without hurting its brain?” or “Which hawk is that flying overhead?” The answers to these and many other bird-related questions will be covered in this series of eight one-hour sessions on the birds you notice while visiting a cottage\, hiking in a northern park or tenting at your favourite campsite. We will cover identification clues\, behavior\, nesting info\, habitat\, foraging techniques and more. Cottage projects and activities that help birds will also be a part of each session as well as a 10-15 minute discussion period for bird-related questions. All eight programs cost of $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! \nMondays and Wednesdays\, January 20\, 22\, 27\, 29\, February 3\, 5\, 10\, and 12\, 2025\, noon to 1 p.m. \nFee: $70.00 + H.S.T. SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces: Andrew Goldman\, “The Cognition of Musical Improvisation: Theories and Experiments”
DESCRIPTION:Improvisation is a challenging topic to study using the theories and methods of cognitive science owing to the difficulty of defining it\, and the diversity of improvisatory practices. I share my theoretical frameworks for engaging this challenge as well as the results from some behavioral and neuroscientific studies. Ultimately\, I draw upon improvisation as a case study for exploring the difficulties of using science to understand music more generally. \nMore About the Presenter:\nAndrew Goldman is a music theorist and cognitive scientist\, and is currently Assistant Professor in Music Theory and Cognitive Science at Indiana University\, where he also directs IU’s Music and Mind Lab. He received his PhD in 2015 at the Centre for Music and Science at the University of Cambridge. He was in the inaugural cohort of Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University\, and also held a postdoctoral position with the Music\, Cognition\, and the Brain initiative at Western University before joining the faculty at Indiana University. \nHis research considers how we can (and cannot) use scientific methods to learn about musical perception and cognition in theory\, and he also designs and conducts behavioral and neuroscientific experiments on music perception and cognition. Goldman’s research has focused on improvisation in music and dance\, and more recent work has addressed the perception of musical form\, melodic contour\, metrical perception\, and embodiment in music. His work has been published in both music and psychology journals\, and has been presented at national and international conferences including the Society for Music Theory\, the International Conference for Music Perception and Cognition\, and the American Psychological Association. Goldman is also a pianist and composer. His original musical\, “Science! The Musical” provides an alternate platform to explore the worlds of music and science. SUMMARY:Landscape Architecture Guest Lecture by Gary Hilderbrand
DESCRIPTION:The Landscape Architecture program in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development presents a guest lecture\, “The Works of Reed Hilderbrand” by Gary Hilderbrand. Gary is a celebrated teacher and prolific writer\, and designer who brings forward a passion for landscape architecture’s history and its future potential everywhere he works. Since co-founding the practice in 2000 with Douglas Reed\, he has been responsible for several projects that enrich and advance urban forestry practices\, from a single plaza to a district to an entire city. \nHilderbrand is also the Peter Louis Hornbeck Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, where he has taught since 1990\, and Chair of the GSD’s Department of Landscape Architecture. The award-winning firm’s honors include the 2013 ASLA Firm of the Year award and Design Intelligence named Gary Hilderbrand one of its “25 Most Admired Educators” of 2016. Gary is the recipient of the 2017 ASLA Design Medal\, the highest honor available to an American landscape architect.

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll learn further GIS tools\, work with tables\, and begin working with raster data. Participants are expected to have strong familiarity with ArcGIS before registering in this workshop. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, and also available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. DESCRIPTION:CARE-AI is concerned about the negative impact of AI on creative fields\, including creative writing. We invite you to our special evening event featuring author Sean Michaels. We are hoping this session will spur further thinking about the potential constructive use of AI in the creative writing process but also highlight the importance of appropriate compensation\, copyright and protection for writers in a world with a serious risk of unauthorized use of their material for training AI models or being displaced by AI-generated content. \nAuthor Event: Sean Michaels Discusses the Origin and Creation of his Novel Do You Remember Being Born? \nIn 2019\, the Giller Prize-winning novelist had his first encounter with a different kind of AI. It was three years before the launch of ChatGPT\, but he found himself beguiled\, unsettled—and even a little compromised—by these early Large Language Models. He began working on a book exploring this disquiet\, and imagining how a great poet might respond to such technology—a poet like the infamous Marianne Moore\, in her cape and tricorn hat. The result\, Do You Remember Being Born?\, has been hailed by WIRED magazine as “the definitive novel about art in the age of AI\,” and by the New York Times as “a jumping-off point for timeless meditations on art\, family\, connection and the meaning of a life.” On February 24\, Sean visits the University of Guelph to discuss the book’s origin and its creation—which was undertaken partly\, and in deliberate discomfort\, with AI tools. In his talk\, he will raise new questions about the serious challenges and surprising opportunities provoked by these discoveries\, and force us to rethink what it can mean to “collaborate.” \nTo join us\, please register.
