SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Poem-Making from Place with Anna Swanson
DESCRIPTION:This walk invites participants to engage in an exploration of place through poetry. Inspired by the practice of ecological mapping and the work of writer Anna Swanson\, participants will use sight\, sound\, and texture as tools for gathering language from the world around us on this walk along the Speed and Eramosa Rivers. Throughout the walk\, landscape and cityscape will be observed not just as scenery\, but as layered texts: full of found language\, silences\, and ruptures. \nStarting and ending at the Covered Bridge steps by the Boathouse Tea Room\, this walk includes moments of observation\, note-taking\, and guided prompts that encourage poetic response. The poems created—individually and together—become a remapping of Guelph based on the sensory\, emotional\, and imagined textures of the city. No experience with poetry is required—just a willingness to walk\, to notice\, and to listen. Registration on Eventbrite is required.

SUMMARY:Domesticating Wildness: Snow Leopard Tourism and Evolving Multispecies Relationships in the Indian Himalayas
DESCRIPTION:The next Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) Webinar will feature Karine Gagné\, Associate Professor\, Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, University of Guelph. \nHow does snow leopard tourism reshape multispecies relationships? In the Indian Himalayas\, this tourism has gained traction\, attracting visitors eager to see the elusive snow leopard. This growth is tied to changing relationships between local communities and the endangered animal\, which has become a stable source of income. As the local agro-pastoral economy declines\, residents are increasingly viewing the snow leopard as an object of interest rather than a nuisance. This presentation draws on interspecies mutuality scholarship to explore how the success of this niche tourism extends beyond financial incentives. It examines evolving multispecies relationships\, from developing expertise in spotting the animal to the emotions generated by these encounters. \nThis event will be hosted virtually via Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.

SUMMARY:Countering Policy Exclusions: Centring accessibility to advance the right to housing
DESCRIPTION:Despite a range of policies\, promises\, and protections\, housing for people with disabilities—and specifically that considers the distinct experiences of women and gender-diverse people with disabilities—remains deeply inadequate in Ontario and across the country. People with disabilities face disproportionate rates of homelessness\, housing insecurity\, and housing inadequacy\, and women with disabilities are especially likely to experience homelessness because of violence or abuse. This creates dangerous consequences when coupled with inadequate housing supports in communities across Ontario\, a failure to centre accessibility in efforts to increase housing supply\, and grossly inadequate social assistance rates for people with disabilities. \nJoin a conversation with civil society leaders and researchers about what is needed to ensure the right to housing for women and gender-diverse people with disabilities across the province\, and the role of women and gender-diverse people with disabilities in leading responses to these housing failures. \nRegister to attend in-person (space is limited) or to receive the Zoom link.

DESCRIPTION:Natural systems and human well-being are deeply connected. Ranaivo’s research in Madagascar\, Central America\, and Kenya highlights the importance of forests\, fisheries\, and local community participation in their management to human health outcomes. SUMMARY:One Health seminar - Impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Whitney Preisser\, Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University\, Georgia\, USA will speak on “Using historical ecology to measure the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish.” \nDr. Preisser will discuss two projects using fluid-preserved specimens to determine the impacts of climate change\, heavy metal pollution\, microplastics\, and reservoir damming on parasitic diseases of fish over long time spans. First\, using more than 600 marine fish specimens collected between 1880 and 2019 in the Salish Sea\, she tracked changes in parasite communities over time and investigated the potential for heavy metal pollution and sea surface temperature to have caused the observed changes. Second\, using over 500 freshwater fish collected between 1999 and 2016 in Georgia\, she explored the effects of reservoir damming on the diversity and abundance of parasitic infections. Using a subset of those fish\, she also quantified the prevalence of microplastics and nanoplastics in digestive tracts and searched for links between plastics and parasites. \nThis seminar will be online via Teams. Register to attend.

SUMMARY:Virtual Bird Sounds Series
DESCRIPTION:Into birding but the songs have you stumped? Whether you are new to learning bird sounds or you want a good refresher\, this course is for you. Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of 5 bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures that cover over 150 bird species! We will focus on songs and some common\, distinctive calls and will apply different methods to remember them. Each course will start with a short intro topic about birding by ear before we dive into the bird species. Learn how to make your own calls\, read a sonogram\, make up your own memorable bird song sayings\, and more! Each class will finish with a 10-15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. See the descriptions below to find out which bird groups are covered in each class. All eight programs cost of $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! This fund-raising initiative will help support other Arboretum educational programs. \nFee: $70.00 + H.S.T. This event will take place on Zoom. The list of topics with the presentation date is listed below. If you miss any of the programs\, each one is recorded and the recording will be sent to you the next day. The recordings will be available for one month after the last program. \nMondays and Wednesdays\, March 17\, 19\, 24\, 26\, 31\, April 2\, 7 and 9\, 2025\, Noon – 1 p.m.
