SUMMARY:Movement Monday - Chair Yoga: Get Fit Where you Sit
DESCRIPTION:Chair Yoga is the way to go when you are reluctant to get into the yoga clothes and get on the mat – challenge yourself with Chair yoga. \nChair Yoga is a gentle yoga practice that adapts various traditional postures for practice in the chair or with the support of a chair. It is a gentle form of yoga that involves breath-work\, meditation\, and gentle stretches; all of which release stress and tension from both body and mind. This form of yoga helps those who are aging or have disabilities but is also used in office settings to relieve stress right in our own office chairs\, even during the workday. The practice increases flexibility\, strength\, and body awareness. It soothes the nervous system and helps to calm the busy mind. It also decreases the potential for injury due to repetitive strain in the workplace! \nLearn more here. \nAbout the facilitator:\nMonique Vischschraper is an advanced\, certified yoga instructor with over a thousand hours of yoga teaching experience. Her own practice dates back to her youth; her mother to this day jokes that she was doing yoga in-utero in tandem with her mother. Monique leads yoga at the Guelph Community Health Centre\, Movati\, and at the University of Guelph as part of the U of G Yoga and Meditation Collective. She is continually studying and upgrading her knowledge and skills. She enjoys learning about the anatomy\, physiology and science of yoga as well as studying the ancient yogic texts.

SUMMARY:Upcoming Exhibit Launch: Truth or Treason? Sources for the Study of the Jacobites
DESCRIPTION:Archival and Special Collections (A&SC) at the McLaughlin Library invites you to attend the launch of the Truth or Treason? Sources for the Study of the Jacobites exhibit on Monday\, April 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Robert Whitelaw Room in the library. The launch will include a keynote talk by Dr. Leith Davis\, professor in the Department of English and the Director of the Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University and will be live streamed via Zoom and recorded. Should you plan to attend the event virtually\, kindly register online to receive the Zoom link. \nAbout the Exhibition \nThis exhibition was curated by students in Dr. Kevin James’ HIST 3560 and Melissa McAfee’s HIST 3480 experiential learning classes offered jointly by the History Department and the McLaughlin Library (please see full curator and contributor list included below.) It showcases the library’s outstanding collection of rare Jacobite pamphlets\, manuscripts\, artifacts\, and maps. Highlights include an encoded intelligence letter from 1715\, four original Jacobite medallions\, and eighteenth-century propaganda pamphlets both for and against the Jacobite cause. Each document offers insight into long standing assumptions about the role of Jacobitism in British history. \nWho were the Jacobites? \nThe Jacobites were the followers of King James II and VII (ruler of England and Scotland) and his descendants\, who went into exile after the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688. The “Glorious Revolution” ended the reign of King James II and VII and initiated a long period of political instability across England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland. Replaced by the King’s daughter Mary II and her Dutch husband\, William of Orange\, the exiled James and his supporters publicly challenged the legitimacy of their right to reign\, dubbing themselves Jacobites. The 1701 Act of Settlement’s exclusion of Catholics in the line of succession brought further seismic changes to British politics\, as Anne\, the last Stuart monarch\, was replaced in 1707 by George\, Elector of Hanover\, the most senior Protestant descendant of James I and VI. After the Act of Union in 1707\, Scotland and England were united politically\, but deep-seated tensions plagued this newly united “Great Britain”. Taking full advantage of this strain\, the Jacobites would go on to pose a significant threat to the authority of Crown and Parliament during the eighteenth century. \nWhile the English monarchs from 1688 onward were proud Protestants\, the exiled Catholic James and his heirs threatened to undermine the Church of England. Yet\, as this exhibition demonstrates\, the story of the political struggles between the Jacobites and their detractors is much more complex than a religious conflict. Neither was it a struggle between Scottish Highlanders and Lowlanders. Indeed\, the persistent conflicts over the succession to the British Crown exposed deep cleavages in Scotland and beyond. \nHistorians have debated whether Jacobitism was a sustained movement\, or a sporadic set of loosely connected uprisings. They have explored its politics\, the dynamics of armed struggle\, and the intersections of theology and political thought. Historians have also expanded their scope to explore the role of women\, material culture\, and the presence of Jacobitism in popular lore and literature\, notably in the works of Sir Walter Scott. Faced with this complexity\, it has been tempting to simplify the origins and dynamics of these conflicts. Indeed\, analysing historiographic distortions forms a part of the contemporary approaches to the Jacobites. \nToday historians are working to understand how the Jacobite cause was framed and reinterpreted\, and what these changes in interpretation reveal. The exhibit\, which will be available in the A&SC Exhibit Gallery on the second floor of the library from April 3\, 2023 to March 1\, 2024\, invites visitors to decide whether it narrates a tale of truth or treason. \n_____ \nExhibit Curators: Julia Bifolchi\, Brayden Boersma\, Julia Di Castri\, John Cleland\, Megan Gable\, Gavin Huges\, Riva Lewis\, Cameron MacKay\, Gregory McDonald\, Manuel Muncaster\, Emma Noble\, Andrew Northey\, Dylan Parry-Lai\, Amraj Sahota\, Patricia von Holstein-Rathlou\, Wilda Thumm \nExhibit Design and Promotion: Julia Bifolchi\, Eva Gabler\, Alex Goddard\, Aysha Grewall\, Molly McNeely\, Amy Moffat\, Manuel Muncaster\, Christian Quattrociocchi \nMcLaughlin Library Exhibit Consultants: Graham Burt\, Emily Clarke\, Ashley Shifflett-McBrayne

SUMMARY:Donation Drive: Menstrual Hygiene Products
DESCRIPTION:Help us support our U of G students’ during Women’s History Month by donating menstrual hygiene products as we work towards ending period poverty and ending the stigma around menstruation. \nMenstrual Hygiene Items that can be donated: \n\nTampons\nPads\nMenstrual Cups\n\nAll donations will go to the Guelph Student Food Bank to support our own U of G students. Please ensure that all donated items are unopened and new. \nFor each item\, you donate you will be entered into a draw to win a $25 Hospitality Services gift card. There is no limit to the number of donations\, nor the number of times you are entered into the prize draw. \nQuestions? Please email wellnessatwork@uoguelph.ca \nWhat is period poverty?\nPeople who experience period poverty are unable to purchase the menstrual products they need\, and\, in many cases\, this means that they cannot go to school or work or otherwise participate in daily life. Or it may mean that those who menstruate are not replacing products with new ones at appropriate timeframes\, putting them at risk of infections and even toxic shock syndrome. \nIn 2020\, close to 25% of menstruating Canadians and about 33% of those younger than 25 faced financial hardship in securing “menstrual products for themselves or their dependants.” In that same year\, it was estimated that “Canadians who menstruate typically spend up to $6\,000 in their lifetime on menstrual hygiene products.” For women who live in remote or rural Canadian areas\, the cost is even heftier — women pay twice as much for menstrual products.” \nOne way U of G has worked towards ending period poverty is by offering products in certain campus buildings. Learn more about the CSA’s Menstrual Hygiene Initiative. \nA note on language:\nWe use the language of “menstruating Canadians” and “those who menstruate” because not all women menstruate and not all those who menstruate are women. Not everybody who menstruates identifies as a girl or woman. Transgender men and genderqueer people who have uteruses\, vaginas\, fallopian tubes\, and ovaries also get their periods. \nWhat does this have to do with well-being?\nThere are many components to well-being\, with community well-being being one of them. Community well-being speaks to ways organizations can be involved in the community and how this can improve the health and well-being of our community members\, including our own U of G students! As come together to provide these donations to the Student Food Banks\, we are also working towards supporting the health and well-being of our students.

SUMMARY:HeforShe at U of G with Olympic Soccer Diana Matheson
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 22nd and celebrate the strength and resilience of our community. The evening will include a keynote speaker and presentations of scholarship and award winners. \nTwo-time Olympic bronze medalist & former professional soccer player Diana Matheson will keynote UofG’s annual HeForShe gender equity event. \nMatheson\, perhaps best known for scoring the game-winning goal in the bronze medal match in the 2012 London Olympic Games\, is also the co-founder of Project 8\, an initiative to help launch Canada’s first women’s professional soccer league. During her keynote\, Matheson will discuss the gender equity challenges that women athletes face in professional sports. A timely topic as Canada’s women’s soccer team is currently protesting their pay in comparison to the men’s national team. \nHosted by U of G’s Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics (Lang)\, School of Engineering and Gryphon Football\, the annual HeForShe event also includes a community impact award\, which recognizes a local business’s efforts to improve gender equality\, and scholarships for students to recognize their leadership. \nThe doors open for the event at 6:30PM\, which formally begins at 7:00PM. Learn more about the event here. \nAbout the HeForShe Initiative \nHeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality\, initiated by UN. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to partake as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes and behaviours. Grounded in the idea that gender inequality is an issue that affects all people—socially\, economically and politically—it seeks to actively involve men and boys in a movement that was originally conceived as “a struggle for women by women”.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Propagating Plants from Cuttings
DESCRIPTION:Cuttings are a great way to propagate all kinds of plants including perennials\, trees\, shrubs and houseplants. This workshop will look at different ways to propagate cuttings and compare them to using seeds. Most of the time will be spent on techniques that use media other than water. \nWe’ll distinguish between softwood\, semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings. Have a look at different media and examine the role of rotting hormones\, both commercial and DIY options. \nThe speaker will show you his simplified method that is great for gardeners since it requires no special equipment. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.
