SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 Keynote: Intentional Intersectional Leadership with Payton Head
DESCRIPTION:As a leader who represented thousands of diverse people from the U.S. and abroad\, Payton Head had to find the unique balance between advocating for the well-being of the Black community while advocating for students of all different backgrounds. He discusses inclusive leadership strategies that focus on being intentionally intersectional in the representation of communities different from his own. \nHead also talks about his own experiences navigating white LGBTQ spaces as a Black man and Black liberation spaces as someone with a queer identity. \nGrab your FREE TICKET HERE by Tuesday\, February 28 to secure your spot! U of G folks\, please login/register to access tickets. \nThis event is part of the University of Guelph’s Black History Month 2023 Programming hosted by Cultural Diversity Services and the Guelph Black Students’ Association. If you have questions about this or any of our other programs for the month\, please contact us at cultural.diversity@uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology
DESCRIPTION:The College of Biological Science is proud to host Prof. Holly A. Shiels (Faculty of Biology\, Medicine and Health\, University of Manchester) as the keynote speaker of the 2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology. \nFrom Oil Spills to Air Pollution: The Heartbreak of PAHs\nPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derive from fossil fuels and enter aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems where they are cardiotoxic. This seminar will begin with marine oil spills and the evidence pointing to the 3-ringed PAH – phenanthrene – as a key cardiotoxicant for fish and aquatic invertebrates. The data will show how exposure to this single but ubiquitous pollutant disrupts cellular function in cardiomyocytes leading to changes in whole organ function. These effects increase susceptibility to life-threatening arrhythmias and mechanistically link an abundant pollutant to cardiac health risk. As global levels of fossil-fuel based pollution continue to rise\, the vertebrate cardiotoxicity discussed here also serves as a portend for human health. \nJoin us in-person (ALEX 200) or online (https://zoom.us/j/95799778017?pwd=a21wbU1oUC9kWFRNbVVJOFU4RTh3QT09; Meeting ID: 957 9977 8017; Passcode: 402870) \nEVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND! \nFor questions about this event\, email tgillis@uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Virtual (Zoom) Constellation "Walk"
DESCRIPTION:Learning the night sky is like getting to know a new neighbourhood. At first\, it may seem big and confusing\, but as you strike out and become more and more familiar with prominent landmarks\, the day comes when you realize that the neighbourhood is no longer new. It’s home. \nJoin us for monthly sessions as we get to know the night sky a little better. Participants will be introduced to prominent stars and constellations\, where to look for them and how the motions of planet Earth cause them to appear to shift from hour to hour and month to month. You will receive a downloadable star map to help you make your way through the stars. We’ll learn a half dozen or so constellations every month and you will be invited to discuss your observations with the group as we each get to know the neighbourhood a little better. \n*Please see in-person session below (April 11) before registering for any of these Constellation Walk Programs. If you want to attend the in-person evening you can register for it along with these 3 virtual sessions below. If you sign up for the in-person you do not need to sign up for the virtual\, as they are included in the in-person registration. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person\, per session (evening).

SUMMARY:Movement Monday - Chair Yoga: Get Fit Where you Sit
DESCRIPTION:Chair Yoga is the way to go when you are reluctant to get into the yoga clothes and get on the mat – challenge yourself with Chair Yoga. \nChair Yoga is a gentle yoga practice that adapts various traditional postures for practice in the chair or with the support of a chair. It is a gentle form of yoga that involves breath-work\, meditation\, and gentle stretches; all of which release stress and tension from both body and mind. This form of yoga helps those who are aging or have disabilities but is also used in office settings to relieve stress right in our own office chairs\, even during the workday. The practice increases flexibility\, strength\, and body awareness. It soothes the nervous system and helps to calm the busy mind. It also decreases the potential for injury due to repetitive strain in the workplace! \nAbout the facilitator:\nMonique Vischschraper is an advanced\, certified yoga instructor with over a thousand hours of yoga teaching experience. Her own practice dates back to her youth; her mother to this day jokes that she was doing yoga in-utero in tandem with her mother. Monique leads yoga at the Guelph Community Health Centre\, Movati\, and at the University of Guelph as part of the U of G Yoga and Meditation Collective. She is continually studying and upgrading her knowledge and skills. She enjoys learning about the anatomy\, physiology and science of yoga as well as studying the ancient yogic texts.
