This year’s novel is What Strange Paradise\, by Egyptian-Canadian author and journalist\, Omar El Akkad. It is the story of two children finding their way through a hostile world. But it is also a story of empathy and indifference\, of hope and despair – and about the way each of those things can blind us to reality. \nAbout Gryphons Read\nGryphons Read is a tradition at the University of Guelph\, started by the well-known and well-loved author\, U of G Creative Writing faculty\, Lawrence Hill. With help from then Provost\, now President Charlotte Yates\, the College of Arts Dean’s office\, and McLaughlin Library. The program functions thanks to the year-round logistical support from the Experiential Learning Hub. \nEach year\, a book that explores diverse identities and lived experiences\, and is authored by a Canadian writer\, is selected to be shared and read by the campus community. Gryphons Read hosts the author on campus for a few days in late September where they meet with students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members in various classes and public events. \n\nOmar El Akkad is an author and journalist. He was born in Egypt\, grew up in Qatar\, moved to Canada as a teenager\, and now lives in the United States. He has won numerous journalism awards in addition to the multiple awards he has received for both his debut novel\, American War\, and What Strange Paradise. \n\nSchedule of Events\nSeptember 5-7 (Orientation Week)\, 11 AM – 1 PM\nBring your U of G ID card and pick up a free copy at the Gryphons Read registration tent beside Raithby House by Branion Plaza (while supplies last). SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day | Every Child Matters
DESCRIPTION:Started in 2013\, in Williams Lake\, British Columbia\, Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration and reunion events. Phyllis Webstad shared the memory of her shiny new orange shirt\, bought by her grandmother\, that was taken from her on her first day at the school. \nThe St. Joseph Mission Residential School\, which was open from 1891-1981\, was one of 130 residential schools in Canada. Now the day honours the Survivors\, those who didn’t make it and the families that have been impacted by residential schools. \nThe Orange Shirt Society encourages and supports the commemoration of Orange Shirt Day. \nOrange shirts will be on sale at the U of G Bookstore the week of September 25.  \nIndigenous Initiatives\, the Indigenous Student Centre and the Bookstore have collaborated to bring a unique orange shirt to campus in acknowledgement of Orange Shirt Day. $5 from the sale of each shirt will be donated to the Survivor Secretariat\, an organization that organizes and supports efforts to uncover\, document and share the truth about what happened at the Mohawk Institute during its 140+ years of operation. \nThe design was created by Kaitlin Gallant\, Indigenous graphic designer\, illustrator and beadwork artist. \nIn honour of Residential School Survivors and the children who never returned home\, the shirt depicts a Forget-Me-Not flower surrounded by Sage and Sweetgrass. Sweetgrass braids remind us of our strength when we come together\, and sage supports our healing.
