SUMMARY:Stories as a Nurse and a Nomad
DESCRIPTION:Available in person AND online. \nJoin the AGG Volunteer Association as they welcome Renata Mares for a talk and presentation at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. An AGG volunteer\, Renata works as an adaptation consultant and nurse educator. With a focus on public health\, Renata has been committed to assessing and improving the way the Canadian healthcare system functions and supports its workers\, especially nurses\, in the face of a healthcare crisis and pandemic. With a career that has taken her to four continents and thirty countries\, she lived and worked in Nunavut and the Yukon between 2015 and 2020\, a residency that transformed how she thinks about creative practice and wellbeing\, art and science. \nLiving within Inuit communities and engaging in community projects offered Renata direct engagement with artists in the North and their work across varied media\, as well as a deeper appreciation of the personal and social roles art plays. Living among northern communities also allowed Renata to build conversations with artists\, collecting not only art\, but stories of their motivation. Renata will speak about these experiences that have shaped her insight into building trust and resilience among individuals and communities\, as well as the profound impact of artistic exploration on health\, healing\, and wellbeing. \nJoin in person at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, or virtually on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Morning Mindful Moment
DESCRIPTION:Join this short mindful moment or the entire series to kick start your Monday morning and your week. \nThis mindfulness exercise will be a guided activity focused on guided breathing. Join to sit back\, relax and follow along to the guided script to start your day in a positive way. All levels of experience are welcome! \nBut first… what is mindfulness?\nMindfulness is moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts\, feelings\, and experiences without judgment. It is taking a closer look at the right here and right now. SUMMARY:Virtual Travels with a Nature Geek: Six Continents of Life
DESCRIPTION:Since 1999\, the Arboretum’s interpretive biologist Chris Earley has traveled the world as a nature tour leader for Worldwide Quest. Each of his six talks focus on a different continent and showcase the amazing life that is found there. You’ll meet wildlife you know such as whales\, leopards and penguins\, and wildlife you may not know\, such as lorises\, mobulas\, silvereyes and geladas. Join Chris and his enthusiasm for these informative and entertaining forays into the nature of our planet. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person\, per session or book all 6 at once and pay $55 ($5 off the series). \nBirds and Beasts Abound (Brazil and the Galapagos)\nMonday\, Feb. 26\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nToday we look at the wildlife of two different places on this incredibly biodiverse continent. In Brazil\, see the elusive (Jaguar) and the stranger-than-strange (Giant Anteater). We will meet the world’s longest parrot and visit a church that has befriended a wolf taller than a Great Dane. The Galapagos hosts a wide variety of inhabitants than are both accepting and entertaining. \nAsia: The Land where the Leopard is King (Sri Lanka)\nWednesday\, Feb. 28\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nIf you like safaris\, Sri Lanka is the place for you. With some of the world’s largest Leopards\, a variety of habitats and beautiful birdlife\, this “drop in the ocean” off the coast of India is an entrancing place for wildlife watching. Dancing daddy longlegs\, displaying peacocks and inquisitive monkeys are ready to grab your attention. \nNorth America: Friendly Whales (Mexico’s Baja California)\nFriday\, March 1\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nPicture this: You are in a small boat in a shallow bay. You hear a puff of air behind you and turn to see a whale… but not just any whale\, one of the world’s friendliest whales. And this whale lifts her baby up to the surface to meet you. For no reward and for no reason other than that she seems to want you to meet her baby as much as you want to meet her baby. These are Baja’s Grey Whales. Oh\, did we mention that there are a myriad of other whales to see here\, too\, as well as sea lions\, whale sharks\, elephant seals\, hummingbirds\, shorebirds\, gulls… \nAustralia: Research on the Reef and more\nMonday\, March 4\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nImagine literally living on the Great Barrier Reef. As an undergrad student\, I did just that while I was studying a small bird called the Silvereye. Learn about the life of a coral cay island sitting on one of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems. Egg-laying sea turtles\, 60 000 nesting noddy terns\, 40 000 howling shearwaters\, giant spider roommates\, shark faceoffs\, sandwich-stealing rails and more\, all on an island less than 1 km long. \nAntarctica: Amazing Animals of the Last Continent\nWednesday\, March 6\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nThere be penguins! Visit the vastness that is Antarctica. Incredible vistas and frozen seas where seals\, whales and seabirds converge on a food chain based on algae and krill. A stop at South Georgia reveals a Serengeti-like congregation of mammals and birds… including hundreds of thousands of King Penguins. Was that a massive Wandering Albatross that just flew by? \nAfrica: The Ultimate Wildlife Safari (Tanzania\, Kenya\, Namibia and Botswana)\nFriday\, March 8\, 2024\, noon to 1 p.m. \nA trip to Africa is like stepping into a wildlife documentary… you literally don’t know which way to look or what animal to focus your attention on. The intricate patterns on the zebras and giraffes. The sounds of the hippos and hyenas. Size of the eagles and storks. Meet the largest\, noisiest and jaw-droppingest collection of creatures you could ever hope to see. \nRegister to attend.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Anong Beam and Rhéanne Chartrand
DESCRIPTION:In response to the Art Gallery of Guelph’s Fall 2023 exhibition Carl Beam: Pieces of a Puzzle\, AGG welcomes artist Anong Beam\, Carl Beam’s daughter\, in conversation with curator Rhéanne Chartrand\, who has long been engaged with Beam’s oeuvre. Considering the stories and legacies of the Manitoulin Island-based M’Chigeeng artist\, their dialogue will centre on The Columbus Suite\, a compelling series of prints featured in the exhibition created by Beam in response to the discourses surrounding the quincentenary of European arrival on Turtle Island. \nProbing the nuances with which the artist investigated and challenged narratives of world history\, politics\, science\, ecology\, materiality\, and Indigeneity\, the speakers will delve into Beam’s profound influence and its resonance on both personal and community levels. The contributions of the prolific artist continue to leave an indelible mark in the realms of both contemporary visual arts and Indigenous cultural resilience and representation. \nCarl Beam: Pieces of a Puzzle was curated by Sally Frater and presented by the Art Gallery of Guelph with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. \nImage detail: Carl Beam\, Lincoln and Ravens\, 1990\, photo-etching. SUMMARY:Listening to Different English Accents (online)
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to understanding different pronunciations\, much of the focus is on changing the speaker while ignoring listening practices. The purpose of this workshop is to have participants consider how they can be better listeners of different types of accented speech. Along with practicing practical strategies to improve understanding of various English accents\, participants will critically think about the nature of listening itself (and how it is not as objective as we think it is). \nThis event is online. A Zoom link will be provided via email approximately one day before the workshop. \nThis workshop is open to all students\, faculty and staff.
