DESCRIPTION:The RBC Training Ground Olympic talent search\, with scouts from nine Olympic sports\, is holding a free event in Guelph for the first time ever. \nNow entering its seventh year\, RBC Training Ground has already found and funded seven Canadian Olympic medallists\, and put hundreds more into Canada’s Olympic talent pipeline. \nOn Sunday April 24\, area athletes are invited to see if they might be suited for an Olympic sport\, even one they’ve never considered\, and potentially earn funding for their own Olympic journey. At each qualifying event participants will perform speed\, strength\, power and endurance benchmark testing in front of National Sport Organizations \nIn year six of the program University of Guelph student Talia Hoffman was identified through the talent search and awarded Future Olympian funding by Rugby Canada. \nThe Guelph event is one of 14 happening across the country this Spring. \nThe top 100 athletes will be selected to compete in the RBC Training Ground National Final\, and potentially earn funding support as an RBC Future Olympian. The National Final will take place in a time and format that places the utmost priority on the healthy and safety of participants. \nWHEN AND WHERE: On Sunday April 24\, this FREE opportunity  for  any local athlete (14-25) comes to the University of Guelph’s Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre\, 175 Reynolds Walk\, in Guelph. The event will run from 9 am.. to approximately noon. \nLocal athletes are encouraged to register at RBCTrainingground.ca and have the chance to meet and show their core speed\, power\, strength and endurance to Olympic talent scouts from nine different sports.

Mental illness\, another affliction brought on by the pandemic\, has never been higher – with studies showing a 30 per cent increase in major mental health struggles. Join with us to kick off Be Well\, Be Safe week as we spend time together to identify empathic strain\, burn out and emotional “pain points” from the pandemic. See the full calendar of events brought to you by Wellness@Work. \nMaking mistakes and experiencing failure are more common than we think\, and part of the reality of work\, especially during a pandemic. In this hands-on workshop\, we will use the phenomenon of failure to frame negative experiences and focus on dealing with mistakes in the workplace. We will discuss how we define failure\, how we react to it\, as well as some tangible strategies to help manage our experiences with failure (and other distressing situations) and the inner critic. We will cover concepts like resilience\, self-compassion\, thought traps and re-storying our experiences\, among many others. There will be opportunities to share experiences and time to reflect. \nAbout the Facilitator:\nVictoria Fritz is currently the Mental Wellbeing Facilitator in Wellness Services\, helping to support current U of G students develop skills and strategies to increase their mental wellness during their time at the University. Victoria is also a PhD candidate in Family Relations and Human Development exploring student stories of academic failure. Join Horticultural Therapy Practitioner Guinevere Kern in bringing the outdoors inside for a one hour\, hands-on\, engaging program that harnesses horticulture to support health and wellness and uplift your day\, irrespective of the size of your “green thumb”. Participants will have all live plants\, soil and related items provided by Wellness@Work\, but should have access to a clean\, flat surface to work on. This sessions will center around transplanting three different types of plants in three different stages of development to accommodate both indoor and outdoor plant growth opportunities as we enter Spring! \nSupplies:\nWellness@Work will purchase supplies to reduce barriers to participation. The different habitats found in The Arboretum should allow us to find a variety of spring ephemerals. Patrick paints what he sees through a spiritual lens which is inspired by his homeland and growing up seeing the original works of woodland painter Norval Morrisseau in various buildings around his home town. After working as a graphic designer\, Patrick launched Patrick Hunter Art & Design\, specializing in artwork and designs from his cultural background with the intent of making artwork that creates a broader awareness of Indigenous iconography. His works can be viewed in the buildings around Toronto such as at CBC Headquarters\, Toronto City Hall\, TD and BMO banks\, The Prince’s Trust Canada\, Rogers Headquarters and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The day consists of poster presentations\, short talks from students and invited local speakers\, guest speakers from many countries\, and a keynote speaker to lead us in an eventful day promising to demonstrate the wide variety and novelty of cancer research taking place at the University of Guelph and around the world. \nWe are very excited to announce our guest speaker lineup for this year\, which will commence with our Keynote Speaker\, Dr. Elizabeth Murchison of the University of Cambridge Transmissible Cancer Group. Dr. Murchison studies the genetics\, evolution and host interactions of clonally transmissible cancers in dogs and Tasmanian devils. Our guest speakers include Dr. Christof Bertram of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna\, Austria; Dr. Laszlo Radvanyi\, President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research in Toronto; and Dr. Andi Flory\, Chief Medical Officer\, and Lisa McLennan\, Director of Clinical Studies & Biobanking for PetDx\, part of the Center for Novel Therapeutics at the University of California (San Diego). DESCRIPTION:Learning the night sky is like getting to know a new neighborhood. At first\, it may seem big and confusing\, but as you strike out and become more and more familiar with prominent landmarks\, the day comes when you realize that the neighborhood is no longer new. It’s home. \nJoin us for monthly sessions as we get to know the night sky a little better. Participants will be introduced to prominent stars and constellations\, where to look for them and how the motions of planet Earth cause them to appear to shift from hour to hour and month to month. You will receive a downloadable star map to help you make your way through the stars. We’ll learn a half dozen or so constellations every month and you will be invited to discuss your observations with the group as we each get to know the neighborhood a little better. \nSpecial Head’s Up: There will be a total Eclipse of the Moon visible later this spring from southern Ontario.
