SUMMARY:Arboretum: Ecopsychology
DESCRIPTION:Participants will have the opportunity to engage in an eight-week program that explores the principles of Ecopsychology and Eco Art Therapy. Walking through this program\, participants gradually gain a deeper sense of self-value\, one’s relationship with nature\, and a desire to engage with Nature as a trusted and valued aspect of one’s own life. \nThe Ecopsychological focus here will be to open yourself to direct experiences within nature and rely on a reciprocation of experiences where you will allow Nature to gently guide your awareness through your senses. You will be challenged to learn from Nature’s wisdom in the absence of words and languages and simply rely on your non-language based senses. You will be amazed by how and what Nature reveals to you through such an approach. You will discover how Nature truly exemplifies ‘unconditional love\,’ and how we can take lessons for our own lives. \nIn each session\, participants will be introduced to new concepts that they will then apply to practical activities\, then reflect both collectively and individually. This course will also explore Eco-Art activities that go beyond the barriers of artistic techniques. Participants will create pieces that they are truly proud of because of the deep experiences and meaning those pieces of art hold. \nGuest Instructor: Memona Hossain \nRegistration \nEarly Bird Fee: $195 by Sept. 4. \nRegular Fee: $210 \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled. Maximum 16 adults.

SUMMARY:Broadband to the Farm and the Politics of Rural Connectivity in America
DESCRIPTION:Hear Prof. Christopher Ali\, Media Studies (University of Virginia) discuss his current research project\, Farm Fresh Spectrum: Rural broadband and the future of connectivity. Ali’s research examines the complicated terrain of rural broadband policy in the United States. Farm Fresh unpacks the politics of broadband policy\, asking why millions of rural Americans lack broadband access and why the federal government\, and large providers\, are not doing more to connect the unconnected. It explores different business structures\, focusing on the importance of co-operatives to provide rural broadband. It contemplates the technologies of rural broadband—from the “future proof” fiber\, to the tried-tested-and-true digital subscriber line (DSL) and the rollout of the advanced cellular networks of 4G\, LTE\, and 5G. It examines the uses of rural broadband\, focusing on precision agriculture. Finally\, it analyzes the policies of rural broadband\, interrogating issues of regulatory jurisdiction\, authority\, legitimacy\, and subsidy. \nThis seminar is organized by the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) Speaker Series and R2B2 Project with the support of Food from Thought\, a partnership of the University of Guelph and Canada First Research Excellence Fund.

SUMMARY:FREE: Fall Equinox Day of Yoga Fun Event
DESCRIPTION:The U of G Classical Yoga for Total Health and Awareness group is celebrating the Fall Equinox by holding a FREE yoga class for the U of G campus! Opening remarks by Carrie Chassels\, Vice-Provost (Student Affairs) at 12 noon. \nFall Equinox is a very special time in nature\, as it is a transition\, preparation\, and balancing point as night and day become equal. It is a natural invitation to turn toward the light within\, to allow for introspection in preparation for the slower\, darker\, and colder months to come. \nLet’s take this time to rebalance\, nourish ourselves\, rest\, restore and release anything not serving our purpose\, so that we can enter the rest of the year re-energized and bring clarity and focus in the mind. \nThis event is open to all students\, staff and faculty at U of G\, and is a time to build community and practice together at this special time of year. \nPlease join us! Find out more. \nThis event is sponsored by the U of G Wellness@Work grant. \nThe Classical Yoga for Total Health and Awareness group also holds FREE Classical Yoga and Meditation classes on campus every Tuesday at lunchtime.
