SUMMARY:ONLINE: CCSAW Seminar - Human-directed Behaviour in Farm Animals: The Goats who Stare at Scientists
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christian Nawroth will summarize recent advances in studies on the cognitive capacities of domestic goats\, focusing on how goats interact with humans. Based on these findings\, he will outline how applied research could benefit from these results\, considering that subtle human behavioural changes can affect the behaviour of farm animals. \nDr. Nawroth is a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in Dummerstorf\, Germany. After completing his PhD in Halle\, Germany\, he was a research fellow at the Queen Mary University\, London where he has worked on goat-human interactions. In 2017\, he moved to the FBN where he is now part of a project that investigates the effects of domestication and specific selection objectives on learning and cognition in goats. \nThis seminar will be delivered via Zoom\nRegister by noon\, Oct. 27 to receive the link.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Provost Dialogue on Teaching - Fall 2020
DESCRIPTION:On October 28\, U of G’s Provost\, Dr. Gwen Chapman\, will host an engaging session for instructors that will provide an opportunity for all of us to reflect on teaching\, learning and academic course delivery in the context of COVID-19. We recognize that shifting to primarily remote delivery was not easy for the fall semester and that many courses will continue in this fashion for winter 2021. The intent of this session is to bring to light successes and challenges experienced across the campus community\, and to use this information to benefit future planning. \nAs a comprehensive\, research-intensive university known to deliver an exceptional student experience\, it is important that we use an evidenced-based reflective practice to inform our decision making. As such\, Provost Chapman will present results from a fall ’20 student experience survey and reflect on prevalent themes. The aim of this is to highlight what is going well and to inform the work of instructors as they continue to learn about working in this mode. \nAfter Provost Chapman’s presentation\, we will hear from representatives of both the undergraduate and graduate student associations as well as two faculty colleagues who will share their personal successes and challenges from this fall. \nWe hope that this session will support our instructors as they continue their work to transition to largely remote learning. The session will be recorded and posted on the Provost website for those unable to attend. \nAgenda \nOctober 28\, 2020 – 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. \nJoin the meeting online. \n2:30 p.m. – Keynote Presentation: Provost Chapman\n2:45 p.m. – Student and Instructor Panel\n3:05 p.m. – Q&A\, Discussion\n3:30 p.m. – Session Conclusion

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Applying to Graduate School in Psychology - A Panel for BIPOC and 1st-Generation Students
DESCRIPTION:The Psychology Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force at the University of Guelph is hosting a recruitment event targeted toward BIPOC and 1st-generation undergraduate students who are considering applying to graduate school in psychology (for eligibility\, see below). Our goal is to help prepare prospective graduate students for the application process and life as a graduate student. \nWho is eligible?\nThe University of Guelph is committed to equity\, diversity\, and inclusion within our organization and within Canada more broadly. We recognize that certain groups are underrepresented in advanced degree programs\, including BIPOC and 1st-generation students. These individuals may have access to less information about graduate school than their colleagues from more advantaged backgrounds through family members\, social circles\, etc. While we encourage all students who feel they could benefit from this event to attend\, we ask you to be mindful that this event is geared toward students from underrepresented groups. Enrollment priority will be given to BIPOC and 1st-generation students. \nHow to Register\nRegistration is FREE. Spaces are limited so please register online. You will be asked to complete a short survey to help us prepare panelists for your questions and inform which components of the graduate school application we should focus on for the workshop. Following registration\, we will be able to send you the link to our Zoom event via email. \nItinerary \nPanel session (2 to 3:30 p.m.)\nOur panel session features three BIPOC scholars who will share their personal experiences of graduate school: the application process\, the training they received\, the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered and their current career path. Following their presentations\, we will open the floor to questions from the audience. \nPanel Q&A (3:30 to 3:50 p.m.) \nBreak (3:50 to 4 p.m.) \nBreakout sessions (4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) \n\nWorkshop on how to make a competitive grad school application (4 to 4:45 p.m.)\nAttendees will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops focusing on different components of the application (e.g.\, writing a statement of interest\, scholarship applications\, structuring your CV\, etc). Workshop topics will be decided based on interest demonstrated in the registration survey.\n Networking/ Q&A with current graduate students (4:45 to 5:30 p.m.)\nThis section of the event is area specific. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with current graduate students in their field of interest (Applied Social Psychology\, Clinical Psychology\, Industrial-Organizational Psychology\, Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Science) and ask questions regarding their experiences and what to expect in graduate school.\n\nFor a full list of panel speakers and more information\, visit our event website. \nRegistration is required for this event. Please register online.
