SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces – Jazz Libre: The Musical-Political Praxis of the Quebec Left
DESCRIPTION:The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) and the University of Guelph Department of History are excited to present historian Eric Fillion. A part of IICSI’s “Thinking Spaces” speaker series\, Fillion will showcase his groundbreaking research between 2:30-4 p.m. on March 12 in MacKinnon Building Room 308. A listening session led by Fillion will follow from 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. These events are open to the public and free of charge. \nFillion’s presentation\, entitled “Jazz Libre: The Musical-Political Praxis of the Quebec Left\,” will explore the work of Jazz Libre\, a musical collective formed in 1967 that sought to transform Quebec society in the wake of the Quiet Revolution. During its eight years of existence\, Jazz Libre encouraged students\, artists\, political activists and working families to participate in the liberating experience of free jazz. \nA postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto\, Fillion has published his research into this distinct moment in Canadian history in his book JAZZ LIBRE et la révolution Québécoise. For this particular research presentation\, Fillion has also curated a collection of songs and sounds to complement his talk—a fitting decision for this self-described “instinctive sound archivist\, forever eavesdropping on the past.” \nFillion’s presentation is part of the 14th annual Creative Music Symposium (March 9-13)\, a series of performances\, lectures\, and forums presented by the Music Students’ Association in the School of Fine Art and Music at the U of G. Taking place across campus and at Silence (46 Essex Street)\, this year’s symposium focuses on wellness and the future of music. \nThe keynote for this year’s symposium\, presented by Prof. Marta McCarthy\, is entitled “Wellness for Musicians in Six Songs.” Other events include a Music Vocational Fair\, a workshop on Music Therapy by practicing music therapist Mary Parkinson\, and several presentations from graduate students in the Critical Studies in Improvisation graduate programs. The full schedule for the Creative Music Symposium can be found online. \nMore information about Eric Fillion’s presentation and listening session can be found on the IICSI’s website.

SUMMARY:CBG Seminar Series: Community-Based Research with Indigenous Peoples - Notes and Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Mcllwraith is a cultural anthropologist in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, University of Guelph. He conducts research with Indigenous communities and individuals in British Columbia. Together with communities\, Mcllwraith works to document territory\, understand food and resource harvesting practices\, and to help Elders and families prepare life histories. His work also includes an effort to understand the attitudes and biases that underpin consulting anthropology projects such as land use and occupancy studies\, particularly in the contexts of unceded territories and Indigenous rights. Recently\, he has partnered with the Canadian Camping Association to help address issues related to cultural appropriation at children’s summer camps. \n“In this talk I will describe my work as a community-based anthropologist in British Columbia. I will describe some of the recent developments at the University of Guelph around ethical research practices with Indigenous communities and groups. And\, I will open a discussion around the implications of community-engaged research and Guelph’s current community-based research directions for Arctic Biodiversity (ArcBio).” \nSeminars: \nThe Centre for Biodiversity Genomics Science Seminar Series is intended to provide a forum for the CBG researchers to present their work and to share new findings and ideas with their colleagues. We also encourage our visiting scientists and collaborators from different U of G departments to participate and present in this seminar series. We believe that this initiative will foster collaboration within CBG and with a wider community of researchers interested in biodiversity genomics. The seminars will be held in the CBG Visualization Theatre (Room 1009) every second Friday\, 11:30-12:30 pm\, starting January 31\, 2020. \nIf you are a faculty member\, postdoctoral fellow\, or visiting researcher and are interested in sharing your research in a 30-45 minute presentation at the Biodiversity Seminar Series please contact one of the coordinators on our website. \nWe accept submissions for talks on an ongoing basis.

SUMMARY:- POSTPONED - Arboretum Planetarium Workshop: All About Mars
DESCRIPTION:– This event has been postponed. Please visit the Arboretum’s website for more information –  \nJoin guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his planetarium for this amazing program (families welcome and encouraged). \nThe red planet Mars will be well positioned for observation in fall 2020. In advance of this opportunity\, this show provides an opportunity to explore the some of the basic scientific facts that have been discovered about one of our closest space neighbors. We’ll begin by reviewing what is meant by the terms “planet” and “orbit.” \nFrom there\, we’ll go on to learn how to recognize Mars (and other planets) in the night sky before reviewing some of Mars’ physical characteristics. Mars appears to have once been a lot like Earth\, with oceans and a dense atmosphere\, but then it all went horribly wrong. Much of what we have learned about Mars has come from robotic missions\, which seem to give rise to as many questions as are answered. \nSEATING ARRANGEMENTS: The planetarium dome is 5 m in diameter. It is a small but intimate space and therefore necessary to be seated on the floor during the presentation. A small foam cushion is provided. For those with mobility issues\, the dome is wheelchair accessible and chair seating can be made available for up to three guests if requested in advance. \nGuest Instructor Trevor Chandler \nRegistration: \nFee: $15 per person PLUS a $10 fee per transaction (you can register multiple people per transaction and multiple planetarium programs per transaction). All registrants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nRegistration Deadline: Mar. 10\, 2020 \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by Mar. 10 the course may be cancelled. Maximum 25 people per session. If the course is full when you attempt to register\, please sign up on the Wait List as we may add an additional time slot. \nPlanetarium workshop video.

DESCRIPTION:– This event has been postponed. Please visit the Arboretum’s website for more information –  \nJoin guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his planetarium for this amazing program (families welcome and encouraged). \nThere are currently eight planets in our solar system. Orbiting many of these planets are a wide variety of moons\, each with its own unique story to tell. This program will explore some of the differences between planets and moons and will introduce some of the major moons of our solar system. We will review definitions of star\, planet\, moon and orbit\, as well as the associated sizes\, distances\, and scales. \nWe’ll look into the motions of the Earth\, sun and our moon and how they cause the Earth’s moon cycles through phases. The first 30 minutes of the program will be spent outside of the dome working with physical models of the Earth\, sun and moon to help understand what we see in the sky. \nFebruary 2020 will feature Venus and Taurus. \nGuest Instructor Trevor Chandler \nRegistration: \nFee: $19 per person PLUS a $10 fee per transaction (you can register multiple people per transaction and multiple planetarium programs per transaction) \nRegistration Deadline: Mar. 10\, 2020 \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by Mar. 10 the course may be cancelled. SUMMARY:-CANCELLED- "The Singing Spirit" a Concert presented by the U of G Choirs
DESCRIPTION:– This event has been cancelled – \nThe University of Guelph Choirs will sing music from a wide range of styles\, including the world premiere of The Farmer Needs the Rain by Roy Forbes\, in a choral setting by Larry Nickel. This is a Relaxed Performance\, meaning that accessibility for all is a priority. \nJoin the University of Guelph Symphonic Choir and Gryphon Singers at their upcoming concert\, presented by the School of Fine Art & Music. Soloists include Karla Oxley\, Larissa Abrams-Ogg\, Matthew Oxley. At the piano\, Betty Maher will recreate the sounds of a symphony orchestra . \nConcert begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs till approximately 9:15 p.m. \nOur concert\, entitled “The Singing Spirit”\, celebrates many traditions\, through which we express our hopes and dreams. The first half of the concert features a major piece called Requiem aeternum (which means Eternal Rest in Latin) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Each movement has its own character\, ranging from a lullaby to a highly dramatic judgement scene\, and including glorious depictions of eternal light\, shining through the darkness of human despair. \nThe second half of the concert also features a piece about eternity (Lux aeterna)\, but also the lighter side of music: a Maritime folk song about a cow that gets stuck in the mud\, and a spoof on classical music with all its prim traditions. The concert gets its name – The Singing Spirit – from a lovely poem that we’ll be singing set to the music of Toronto composer Sheldon Rose. The evening culminates in the moving Blues of Roy Forbes\, the Vancouver singer-songwriter whose soulful voice expresses the trials of farmers in western Canada. Larry Nickel has captured the essence of Forbes in this new setting for the University of Guelph Choirs. \nPurchase tickets online. \n\nAdults – $15\nStudents and seniors – $10\nChildren under 12 – FREE\n\nWe understand that cost can be a barrier to the arts for some people. Therefore\, we are making a number of free tickets available. To request a free ticket for this concert\, please contact Charlotte Bryant at cbryan06@uoguelph.ca.
