SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshop: Getting Data - Intro to Qualtrics Surveys

SUMMARY:SEDRD Speaker Series: Beyond Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Ben Reid-Howells’s talk “Beyond Resilience: Stories from the Field” explores his three-year journey from India to Scotland in which he and his partner Kumar Prashant undertook projects of peace\, sustainable living and community well-being. Pizza will be provided. \nAll are welcome to attend! \nAbout Ben Reid-Howells: \nReid-Howells is an international educator and community organizer with a degree in interdisciplinary sustainability and a background as a trainer\, wilderness guide and educational program designer. At Mahindra United World College of India (UWCMC)\, Reid-Howells co-developed the service-learning department and led the Peace and Justice project-based learning stream (IB CAS). He is the founder of UWCMC’s Mindfulness Program and the Uniting for Peace Youth Festival (2017). He has trained youth\, teachers\, community groups and government officials in community-led processes\, project design and peace-work in Canada\, Guatemala\, India\, Nepal\, Kyrgyzstan\, Greece and Scotland. On the Vasudhaiva Ride\, Reid-Howells coordinated training projects\, communications and the global network-building that made this transnational project-series possible: project partners\, media\, volunteers and international support. \nReid-Howells’s parents are immigrants to Canada from England and Scotland. At sixteen he left home to live and study at a United World College where his passion for social and environmental justice became his compass for finding his life’s work. During his undergraduate degree in sustainability\, he saw the path of academia was distancing him from the front-line communities he most wanted to work alongside. He decided rather than pursue a Master’s degree\, to spend several years exploring diverse ways communities are working to address pertinent issues\, and thus find the form of service that would best suit him and his work alongside communities working towards positive change on Turtle Island (modern-day Canada\, USA and Mexico). After five years of solidarity work internationally\, Ben is now back on Turtle Island\, based in Ontario and seeking to collaborate with regional initiatives to bring about resilience and regeneration: ecologically\, socially\, culturally\, economically and politically.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Planetarium Workshop: Stellar Navigation
DESCRIPTION:Join guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his planetarium for this amazing program (families welcome and encouraged). This planetarium show introduces the history of navigating using the stars. It reviews why stellar navigation was developed\, as well as how the North Star\, Polaris\, can be used to determine compass points or to estimate latitude. The planetarium will be used to simulate how the stars appear to change when viewed from different latitudes on Earth. Is there such a thing as a South Star? \nRecommended for ages 10 and up. All registrants under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nSEATING ARRANGEMENTS: The planetarium dome is 5m in diameter. It is a small but intimate space and therefore necessary to be seated on the floor during the presentation. A small foam cushion is provided. For those with mobility issues\, the dome is wheelchair accessible and chair seating can be made available for up to three guests if requested in advance. \nGuest Instructor Trevor Chandler \nRegistration: \nFee: $17 per person PLUS a $10 fee per transaction (you can register multiple people per transaction and multiple planetarium programs per transaction) \nRegistration Deadline: Mar. 9\, 2020 \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by Mar. 9 the course may be cancelled. Maximum 25 people per session. If the course is full when you attempt to register\, please sign up on the Wait List as we may add an additional time slot. \nPlanetarium workshop video.

SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshop: Data Analysis - Manipulation in R using dplyr and tidyr
DESCRIPTION:R is a programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. This workshop will introduce you to the dplyr package which makes tabular data manipulations easier by using a set of functions to extract and summarize insights from your data. The tidyr package works well with tidy to quickly convert between different data formats (long v. wide) for graphing and analysis. \nThis workshop builds upon the material presented in Part 1: Into R and RStudio. This is not an introductory workshop and requires participants to have taken Part 1 or have experience with R. Please bring a laptop for your own use during the workshop. \nBefore attending the workshop\, please complete the following: \n\nDownload and Install R\nWindows User\nMac User\nInstall RStudio Desktop\n\nWhat is R used for? SUMMARY:Metagenomics-Based Ecosystem Biomonitoring (Ecobiomics)
DESCRIPTION:Teresita Porter\, research scientist with the Great Lakes Forestry Centre\, Natural Resources Canada and a visiting research scientist with U of G’s Centre for Biodiversity Genomics will discuss water and soil biodiversity and how they are essential to sustaining diverse ecosystem services and economic activities across Canada. \nPorter’s research background is in ecology and evolution\, mycology and bioinformatics. Her current work focuses on using genomics methods to monitor water quality\, soil health and sustainability from environmental DNA. Porter has a special interest in how methodological bias affects the analysis of biodiversity and biomonitoring data. \nFind more info on this talk and the CBG Seminar Series. \nMetagenomics-Based Ecosystem Biomonitoring (Ecobiomics)\nWater and soil biodiversity are essential to sustain diverse ecosystem services and economic activities across Canada. Genomics tools are ideal for characterizing complex biodiversity. Teresita Porter will introduce the Government of Canada’s Genomics Research and Development Initiative\, focusing on one of their large interdepartmental projects\, the Metagenomics-Based Ecosystem Biomonitoring (Ecobiomics) project. Porter will discuss the goals and organization of this five-year project. She will review some of the key areas where they have been able to standardize methods during field sampling\, lab processing\, sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Porter’s area of expertise is in the bioinformatic handling and analysis of metabarcoding datasets\, so she will take a shallow dive into the structure of their bioinformatic approach. Porter will discuss how they established a bulk soil sampling methodology that targets arthropods from bulk soil. She will also briefly introduce two ongoing projects that focus on using bulk soil metabarcoding to assess the sustainability of timber harvest.
