SUMMARY:ONLINE: CCSAW Research Seminar - In Pursuit of Better Broiler Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, 70 billion broiler (meat) chickens are raised each year\, and more than 90per cent of them reach ‘market weight’ in just six weeks or so. Is this accelerated growth a problem? In this seminar\, Dr. Stephanie Torrey will discuss the welfare of broiler chickens and whether a transition to slower growing genetics will have a measurable impact on their welfare. \nDr. Torrey’s research on poultry and swine welfare has informed policies and auditing schemes around farm animal genetics\, transportation and euthanasia. As a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and then the University of Guelph\, she authored/co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts on farm animal behaviour and welfare. In her current role as research scientist with Trouw Nutrition\, she now works with a global team to validate nutritional products for poultry production\, health and welfare. A native of Massachusetts\, Dr. Torrey resides in Guelph with her husband and two sons. \nPlease join us on Zoom!\nhttps://zoom.us/j/98105791067
