SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Bird Song - Sparrows
DESCRIPTION:Into birding but the songs have you stumped? Whether you are new to learning bird sounds or you want a good refresher before the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas starts this spring\, this course is for you. Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of five bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures that cover over 150 bird species! We will focus on songs and some common\, distinctive calls and will apply different methods to remember them. Each course will start with a short intro topic about birding by ear before we dive into the bird species. Learn how to make your own calls\, read a sonogram\, make up your own memorable bird song sayings\, and more! Each class will finish with a 10-15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. \nSee the descriptions below to find out which bird groups are covered in each class. SUMMARY:Making Space for Progress: Internationalizing the University as Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:The University of Guelph’s Strategic Refresh highlights the commitment of the university to “further international relationships” as a part of its overall pillar of community connection. The University has also taken measures to advance and entrench equity\, diversity and inclusion into its core values and deliverables. \nThe Teaching and Learning Hub welcomes guest speaker Marsha Hinds Myrie to aide us to contemplate the implications and possibilities of those intersections and offers an innovation of academic internationalization praxis undergirded by social justice. \nThis is a hybrid event. Register to attend via Zoom here. \nMarsha Hinds Myrie looks to the literature resulting from the study of universities’ involvement in the enterprises of African and Indigenous dehumanization and student led justice movements. Beyond highlighting the errors of the past and the passionate demands of students we begin to think about futures and how these can be constructed making space for expanded epistemologies and new relational pathways. \nHinds Myrie’s life and work are an embodiment of dualities and intersections. She is a Barbadian/Canadian citizen with an ancestral\, cultural and intellectual home in Africa. Her career unfolds\, sometimes spectacularly and sometimes confusingly at the intersections of activism and education with research being a forced endeavour to maintain the grace of the academy. \nHinds Myrie is the President’s Gender Equity Committee postdoctoral fellow with a focus on women’s leadership at the University of Guelph and the immediate past president of the National Organization of Women of Barbados. She spent 22 years developing an advocacy model to address the issues of underprivileged groups of women in Barbados and the Commonwealth Caribbean. The major focus of the work is to develop and encourage the use of victim defined services for women and girls affected by various types of gender-based violence while at the same time removing the burden of eradicating violence from women and victims by forcing a stronger lobby in policy spaces. \nThe philosophical mooring for Marsha’s interaction with equity work come partly out of her PhD research which focused on the ways in which political and cultural experiences shaped the development and creation of intellectual spaces and intellectual thought in Commonwealth Caribbean tertiary institutions. The epistemological valleys that create disciplines in the Western academy are still immensely uncomfortable for Hinds Myrie but if forced she would classify her work as womanism\, Black Studies\, philosophy as praxis and intellectual history.

Women may experience symptoms of peri-menopause beginning in their early 40s and continue to experience symptoms into their 50s. Simple nutritional and lifestyle modifications can have a big impact on the experience of menopause and beyond. \nLet’s change the narrative on menopause to make it a time of empowerment and personal growth. \nDuring this seminar\, we will discuss the following: \n\nIdentify the common symptoms of peri-menopause/menopause and how they affect our body\nReview evidence informed tools to address common concerns including hot flashes\, disruptions in mood\, sleep and concentration\nDiscuss life after menopause – reviewing risk factors for osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease\nAnswer questions\n\nClick to register now! Using an evidence-informed approach\, she uses tools such as functional foods\, botanical medicine\, acupuncture and healthy lifestyle modification to address individuals’ concerns. With 15 years of experience in an integrative setting\, she understands the importance of collaborating with an individual’s existing team of medical professionals to optimize health outcome. Within the team at the HPC\, Dr. Brooks’ role is to support foundational health and remove obstacles to wellness and recovery. DESCRIPTION:Cuttings are a great way to propagate all kinds of plants including perennials\, trees\, shrubs and houseplants. This workshop will look at different ways to propagate cuttings and compare them to using seeds. Most of the time will be spent on techniques that use media other than water. \nWe’ll distinguish between softwood\, semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings. Have a look at different media and examine the role of rotting hormones\, both commercial and DIY options. \nThe speaker will show you his simplified method that is great for gardeners since it requires no special equipment. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:HeforShe at U of G with Olympic Soccer Diana Matheson
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 22nd and celebrate the strength and resilience of our community. The evening will include a keynote speaker and presentations of scholarship and award winners. \nTwo-time Olympic bronze medalist & former professional soccer player Diana Matheson will keynote UofG’s annual HeForShe gender equity event. \nMatheson\, perhaps best known for scoring the game-winning goal in the bronze medal match in the 2012 London Olympic Games\, is also the co-founder of Project 8\, an initiative to help launch Canada’s first women’s professional soccer league. During her keynote\, Matheson will discuss the gender equity challenges that women athletes face in professional sports. A timely topic as Canada’s women’s soccer team is currently protesting their pay in comparison to the men’s national team. \nHosted by U of G’s Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics (Lang)\, School of Engineering and Gryphon Football\, the annual HeForShe event also includes a community impact award\, which recognizes a local business’s efforts to improve gender equality\, and scholarships for students to recognize their leadership. \nThe doors open for the event at 6:30PM\, which formally begins at 7:00PM. Learn more about the event here. \nAbout the HeForShe Initiative \nHeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality\, initiated by UN. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to partake as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes and behaviours. Grounded in the idea that gender inequality is an issue that affects all people—socially\, economically and politically—it seeks to actively involve men and boys in a movement that was originally conceived as “a struggle for women by women”.
