SUMMARY:Virtual Bird ID - Arboretum Event
DESCRIPTION:Birding has become an even more popular hobby since more people are home and enjoying nature. Why not take it to the next level? Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of five bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures on eight different bird groups. ID techniques\, field marks\, shapes\, behaviour clues and more will all be covered. Each course will finish with a 10- to 15-minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. You can sign up for individual courses for $8 (plus tax) each or take all eight at the discounted cost of $56 (plus tax) – that’s eight courses for the price of seven! \nCourses will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. from November 23 to December 16. \nBird groups covered include: Hawks\, Ducks\, Sparrows\, Sandpipers\, Gulls\, Spring Warblers\, Fall Warblers and Spring Migrants. \nThis fund-raising initiative will help support other Arboretum educational programs. \nFee: $8 + H.S.T. per session or register for all eight at once and pay for only seven (i.e.\, $56 for all eight instead of $64 – you must sign up for all of them at once in a single transaction; not at different times). SUMMARY:Opposing Oppression: Applying Equity and Inclusion Lenses to Teaching & Learning (Virtual and in-person)
DESCRIPTION:This interactive session will engage critically with anti-oppression frameworks and suggest ways to apply an equity and inclusion lens to teaching and learning. Anti-oppressive teaching and learning involves both critical and practical examinations of individual\, interpersonal\, systemic and cultural barriers to full participation for equity-deserving groups. \nThis session will explore equity and inclusion throughout the teaching and learning life cycle and prompt discussions about equitable and inclusive pedagogy\, curriculum design\, instruction and classroom environments. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nGain a broader awareness of equity and inclusion in teaching and learning and understand connections between a sense of belonging and teaching excellence\nIdentify and apply key concepts\, including diversity\, equity\, inclusion and anti-oppression to the teaching and learning life cycle\, instructional and curriculum design and facilitation\nIdentify and apply anti-oppressive frameworks that act as catalysts for individual\, interpersonal\, systemic and cultural changes\nBe able to identify ways to implement anti-oppressive frameworks in teaching and learning\n\nPresenter:\nAngela Guerra is the Training\, Education and Policy Officer at the Office of Diversity and Human Rights.
