SUMMARY:Women in Indian Films\, Media and Beyond: Representations and Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan\, Professor\, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences\, IIT Madras\, India. \nThe talk will explore representation of women in Indian media and what image of a contemporary Indian woman is formed in films\, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media\, particularly in post “MeToo” times. It will follow up on key ideas and themes discussed at the two-day online conference in 2021\, “Towards a New Vision: Women in Films\, Media & Beyond\,” which featured 20 gender studies and media studies experts. The conference was co-organized by IIT Madras and the University of Guelph with funding from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. \nAysha Iqbal Viswamohan is a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras. She works in the areas of Film Studies\, Popular Culture and American Literature. Her books include edited anthologies: Women Filmmakers in Hindi Cinema: Feminist Gaze and Beyond (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023)\, Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema: Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Springer\, 2020)\, Behind the Scenes: Contemporary Bollywood Directors (Sage\, 2017) and Post-liberalization Indian Novels in English: Global Reception & Politics of Award (Anthem\, 2013). \nThis hybrid event is presented by CIRCLE\, the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement at the University of Guelph. \nAll are welcome. \nWe kindly ask in-person and virtual attendees to register to help us prepare for this event. \nLearn more online.
