SUMMARY:ONLINE: Ontario Veterinary College Chappel Memorial Lecture with Dr. Laszlo Radvanyi
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Chappel Lecture will be presented by Dr. Laszlo Radvanyi\, President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR). The annual Chappel Lecture was established by 1950 OVC graduate Clifford Chappel in memory of his father\, to give students and faculty the opportunity to meet internationally known scientists. \nModulation of the Immune Response in Cancer by Retroelements and Endogenous Retroviruses: New Targets for Immunotherapy \nThis lecture will describe how otherwise silent\, non-coding regions of the human genome containing retroelements (REs) and human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are activated in human cancer and their implications. New findings in previous work\, as well as recent work in Dr. Radvanyi’s lab and his international collaborative team\, have found that REs and HERVs are induced in multiple cancer types and can be a source of tumour antigens triggering de novo immune responses in patients that may also be harnessed as a new target for immunotherapy. On the flip-side however\, expression of these REs and HERVs in tumours can also disrupt normal immunoregulation. Recent results have found that in both pediatric and adult cancers\, aberrant transcription at pericentromeric regions of chromosomes lead to the expression and secretion of RNA from REs (including LINE\, SINE and HSAT) and HERVs in extracellular vesicles (EVs) that infect stromal cells and myeloid cells both in the tumour microenvironment and systemically in the body. These EVs are taken up by host cells driving DNA damage and induction of immunosuppressive innate inflammatory responses disrupting normal cellular differentiation and function of macrophages and dendritic cells. Thus\, these EVs seem to be long-distance\, systemic “immune disruptors” in cancer patients and alleviating this systemic immune-dysregulation may represent a new challenge and opportunity in cancer immunotherapy. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Storied Lives: Shifting Perspectives on Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Storied Lives: Shifting Perspectives on Poverty is a joint research project by the Guelph and Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination\, the University of Guelph’s Community Engaged Scholarship Institute\, and Live Work Well Research Centre. The project aims to encourage members of the public to examine their assumptions about the causes of poverty by amplifying the voices of those experiencing poverty. \nUsing composite stories that highlight lived expertise and commentary from experts who work in fields related to poverty reduction\, this podcast series shines a spotlight on structural factors that shape poverty in Ontario and beyond. The use of audio allows for a grounded and intimate approach to mobilizing knowledge about the intersectional experience of poverty. \nBe the first to listen to these podcasts and join a panel discussion with key informants of this research. \nThings to Consider: \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\, Panel Discussion at 7 p.m.\, Podcast Listening at 8 p.m.\, with a social hour to follow at 8:30 p.m.\nComplimentary refreshments will be provided.\nMasks are mandatory.\nDue to COVID-19\, attendees are encouraged to bring personal headphones & mobile devices. The Storied Lives team will supply additional audio support as needed.\n\nIn order to ensure your participation at this event\, please let us know the services and supports you require so we can do our best to make arrangements in advance. For more detailed information\, questions or concerns\, please email storiedlives@outlook.com. \nParking is available after 6 p.m. at the Macdonell lot (34 Macdonell Street) and Market Parkade (10 Wilson Street). SUMMARY:ONLINE: Virtual Constellation Walk
DESCRIPTION:Learning the night sky is like getting to know a new neighborhood. At first\, it may seem big and confusing\, but as you strike out and become more and more familiar with prominent landmarks\, the day comes when you realize that the neighborhood is no longer new. It’s home. \nJoin us for monthly sessions as we get to know the night sky a little better. Participants will be introduced to prominent stars and constellations\, where to look for them and how the motions of planet Earth cause them to appear to shift from hour to hour and month to month. You will receive a downloadable star map to help you make your way through the stars. We’ll learn a half dozen or so constellations every month and you will be invited to discuss your observations with the group as we each get to know the neighborhood a little better. \nemail: arbworks@uoguelph.ca\nphone: 519-824-4120 x52113
