SUMMARY:ONLINE: The Repatriation Debate After the Abolition of Indenture
DESCRIPTION:A webinar with Heena Mistry – Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Training Specialist\, Wilfrid Laurier University. \nAfter the abolition of indenture in 1917\, many repatriated ex-indentured Indian labourers faced marginalization and ostracization within India. Indian diaspora communities\, ocean-crossing activists and nationalists within India debated how best to balance pressure from white settler governments to systematically deport Indians\, and from plantation colony governments to recruit a steady stream of Indian labourers. \nHosted by U of G’s Canada India Research Centre For Learning And Engagement (CIRCLE)

SUMMARY:ONLINE: The Climate Emergency - A GIER Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Institute for Environmental Research (GIER) is pleased to invite you to the webinar The Climate Emergency\, taking place Oct. 15 from 4 to 5 p.m. EDT. \nOur panelists will be: \n\nChantal Bilodeau\, founder and artistic director\, The Arctic Cycle\nProf. Jana Levison\, University of Guelph\nProf. Craig Johnson\, director\, Guelph Institute of Development Studies\n\nThe event will be moderated by Prof. Madhur Anand\, director of GIER. We will also be giving away tickets to see the ALARM- Responding to Our Climate Emergency exhibitions at THEMUSEUM in Kitchener\, Ontario! \nFor free registration\, contact info.gier@uoguelph.ca and let us know if you would like to enter the draw for tickets! \nWe look forward to having you join us! \nWe are faced with environmental problems that are complex and interdisciplinary in nature. And amongst these\, climate change is one of the first to impact every single person on the planet. Consequences have been evident for years: more frequent extreme weather events\, loss of species\, zoonotic outbreaks\, food insecurity\, exacerbated economic inequalities\, vulnerable communities\, forced migrations\, and the list goes on. After several decades of scientific consensus and warning\, we now acknowledge this is an emergency: the climate emergency. Two years ago\, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report with some shocking\, but realistic numbers: we need to reduce our emissions by 45% by the year 2030 to limit global warming by 1.5°C. The IPCC called for “rapid and far-reaching changes in all aspects of society.” In other words\, addressing the climate emergency effectively will require environmental\, social\, economic\, and cultural approaches. We need to break down disciplinary silos and build a new perspective that is inherently interdisciplinary. This is why the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research (GIER) was created: to reframe the way we think and deal with complex environmental challenges. Two year after the IPCC report\, we bring to you three experts with different backgrounds to have an interdisciplinary discussion around the climate emergency. Where are we now? And how do we move forward?

SUMMARY:ONLINE: CCSAW Seminar - Human-directed Behaviour in Farm Animals: The Goats who Stare at Scientists
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christian Nawroth will summarize recent advances in studies on the cognitive capacities of domestic goats\, focusing on how goats interact with humans. Based on these findings\, he will outline how applied research could benefit from these results\, considering that subtle human behavioural changes can affect the behaviour of farm animals. \nDr. Nawroth is a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in Dummerstorf\, Germany. After completing his PhD in Halle\, Germany\, he was a research fellow at the Queen Mary University\, London where he has worked on goat-human interactions. In 2017\, he moved to the FBN where he is now part of a project that investigates the effects of domestication and specific selection objectives on learning and cognition in goats. \nThis seminar will be delivered via Zoom\nRegister by noon\, Oct. 27 to receive the link.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Applying to Graduate School in Psychology - A Panel for BIPOC and 1st-Generation Students
DESCRIPTION:The Psychology Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force at the University of Guelph is hosting a recruitment event targeted toward BIPOC and 1st-generation undergraduate students who are considering applying to graduate school in psychology (for eligibility\, see below). Our goal is to help prepare prospective graduate students for the application process and life as a graduate student. \nWho is eligible?\nThe University of Guelph is committed to equity\, diversity\, and inclusion within our organization and within Canada more broadly. We recognize that certain groups are underrepresented in advanced degree programs\, including BIPOC and 1st-generation students. These individuals may have access to less information about graduate school than their colleagues from more advantaged backgrounds through family members\, social circles\, etc. While we encourage all students who feel they could benefit from this event to attend\, we ask you to be mindful that this event is geared toward students from underrepresented groups. Enrollment priority will be given to BIPOC and 1st-generation students. \nHow to Register\nRegistration is FREE. Spaces are limited so please register online. You will be asked to complete a short survey to help us prepare panelists for your questions and inform which components of the graduate school application we should focus on for the workshop. Following registration\, we will be able to send you the link to our Zoom event via email. \nItinerary \nPanel session (2 to 3:30 p.m.)\nOur panel session features three BIPOC scholars who will share their personal experiences of graduate school: the application process\, the training they received\, the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered and their current career path. Following their presentations\, we will open the floor to questions from the audience. \nPanel Q&A (3:30 to 3:50 p.m.) \nBreak (3:50 to 4 p.m.) \nBreakout sessions (4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) \n\nWorkshop on how to make a competitive grad school application (4 to 4:45 p.m.)\nAttendees will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops focusing on different components of the application (e.g.\, writing a statement of interest\, scholarship applications\, structuring your CV\, etc). Workshop topics will be decided based on interest demonstrated in the registration survey.\n Networking/ Q&A with current graduate students (4:45 to 5:30 p.m.)\nThis section of the event is area specific. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with current graduate students in their field of interest (Applied Social Psychology\, Clinical Psychology\, Industrial-Organizational Psychology\, Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Science) and ask questions regarding their experiences and what to expect in graduate school.\n\nFor a full list of panel speakers and more information\, visit our event website. \nRegistration is required for this event. Please register online.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Thinking Spaces Speaker Series with Dong-Won Kim
DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present percussionist\, pedagogue\, vocalist\, composer and improviser Dong-Won Kim for his talk “Time to Plant Seed.” \nThis event will take place via Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online. \n“Time To Plant Seed”: Now\, we all know that the world and music environment won’t be the same after the pandemic. Perhaps we have to define it as a crisis for musicians and performers. However\, I’d suggest we pursue the value of improvisation in times of desperation. It’s like when farmers lose their harvest for some reason; they always go back to the stage of planting a seed. I believe that improvisation becomes more valuable in times of crisis because it always leads us to the most essential elements of artistry and humanity. We can start over from there. We have each other and technologies to keep us contacted. – Dong-Won Kim \nDong-Won Kim has studied the traditional music of the Korean masters and works to introduce the world to the beauty of Korean traditional culture and music via his participation in numerous intercultural projects.
