SUMMARY:ONLINE: Hopper Lecture ft. Dr. Caroline Shenaz Hossein
DESCRIPTION:The Hopper Lecture is sponsored by the International Development Research Centre in honour of its first president\, David Hopper. \nGuest speaker Dr. Caroline Shenaz Hossein\,  associate professor of Global Development and Political Science (University of Toronto) will speak on the future of cooperation; acknowledging Black feminist economies in the Global South and beyond. Black women in the African Diaspora engage in solidarity economies through a form of mutual aid called ROSCAs. These ‘Banker Ladies’ draw on ancient African traditions of Tontines and Susu that are informal and prioritize the collective. Dr. Hossein will discuss how acknowledging the expertise of these Banker Ladies can help build an inclusive economy and revolutionize Canadian international development policy. \nThis event will be available via live stream and will have a socially distanced in-person audience. All COVID-19 safety protocols must be followed – those wishing to access U of G spaces must be vaccinated against COVID-19. Registration is required for both the online and in-person events.
