Prof. Marion Joppe

With many worried about contracting the new coronavirus over March Break, does it make sense to change travel plans?

Will travel insurance cover you if you cancel your trip? What precautions should you take if you still plan to take your trip?

Prof. Marion Joppe, School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, is an expert on the travel industry and is available for interviews.

Joppe recently spoke to CBC Radio’s Here & Now, and said the global airline and travel industries are losing billions of dollars every week as travellers cancel plans. Many flights are taking off only partially loaded and cruise lines are seeing mass cancellations.

She can discuss what cancellation insurance will cover and what it won’t, as well as whether airlines will waive fees for those who want to rebook flights to areas hardest hit by the virus.

Joppe researches the economic, social and environmental impacts of the tourism industry. She has examined the policy, planning and marketing of destinations, and motivations for travel. She has made several media appearances in recent weeks, speaking to The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, CBC News Online and more.
