Western University Prof. Shauna Devine will give the inaugural Cassidy-Reid Lectureship in United States History.

Devine’s lecture on “Making Medicine Scientific: The Civil War and American Medicine” will include never-before published photographs from Civil War hospitals and laboratories.

Devine’s talk is based on her award-winning book, Learning from the Wounded: The Civil War and the Rise of American Medical Science, which received the Tom Watson Brown Book Award and the Wiley-Silver Prize this year.

The lecture will be held in the McLaughlin Library, Room 246B, and is free and open to everyone. A reception will follow.

The new biennial lecture series honours two recently retired U of G American history professors, Richard Reid and Keith Cassidy. Reid specialized in the American Civil War and Cassidy’s work focused on the anti-abortion movement.
